PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

Primary Purpose

1. To provide qualifiers with a full understanding of historical development, manufacturing, composition, physical and chemical properties, classification, requirements, advantages, disadvantages, applications and biological behaviour of materials used for various dental procedures.

2. To enable qualified dentists to more successfully interpret and apply information pertaining to dental materials in their practices.

Subsidiary Purpose
To provide an academic base for further studies and research.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Learners must be registered as dentists by the Medical and Dental professional Board of the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

A newly qualified person must:
1. Know and be able to apply physical and chemical concepts to situations in the oral cavity, linked to dental materials.
2. Be able to select the most suitable materials related to the ideal and compromised treatment options.
3. Be able to identify, evaluate and interpret unacceptable observations.
4. Be able to formulate and implement remedial actions.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Integrated assessment.

In order to assess whether the exit-level outcomes have been achieved formative and summative assessments are done throughout the study period. These include the seminars, research project and written and oral tests and examinations.
A qualifier must have, through the above assessment procedures, proved that s/he has achieved the NQF level 7 standards.

MODERATION OPTIONS

The Faculty maintains a bank of external examiner as approved by Council, with the necessary knowledge, academic qualifications and clinical/practical expertise and national and international standing, from which the external examiners are appointed.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Staff members of the Faculty of Dentistry with the necessary academic qualifications and experience are used as internal assessors.

REREGISTRATION HISTORY

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
