PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Primary Purpose
To provide qualifiers with additional knowledge, skills and competence in the field of endodontics to diagnose and treat more difficult cases.

Subsidiary Purpose
To provide future teaching staff for the dental schools of South Africa

Learners must be registered as dentists by the Medical and Dental Professional Board of the health Professions Council of South Africa

A newly qualified person must:
1. Be able to diagnose the cause of the underlying endodontic condition.
2. Be able to treat the condition
3. Be able to use different clinical techniques to achieve successful treatment of the condition.
4. Know how to engage in lifelong learning through well-developed learning skills. 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated assessment.

In order to assess whether the exit-level outcomes have been achieved formative and summative assessments are done throughout the study period. These include the seminars, clinical work in the students' own place of work, discussions as well as and written and oral tests and examination.
A qualifier must have, through the above assessment procedures, proved that s/he has achieved the NQF level 7 standards.

MODERATION OPTIONS 
The Faculty maintains a bank of external examiner as approved by Council, with the necessary knowledge, academic qualifications and clinical/practical expertise and national and international standing, from which the external examiners are appointed. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
Staff members of the Department of Operative Dentistry of the Faculty of Dentistry with the necessary academic qualifications and experience are used as internal assessors. 

REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
