| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| PRIMARY PURPOSE
1. To provide dentists with special skills in dentoalveolar and minor oral surgery. 2. To enable the full-time dental practitioner to provide a broader spectrum of treatment modalities to his patients. SUBSIDIARY PURPOSE To provide future teaching staff for the dental schools of South Africa. |

| A newly qualified person must:
1. Be able to identify common oral and dental diseases. 2. Be able to draw up a list of differential diagnoses on these diseases. 3. Be able to select appropriate special investigations in order to establish a final diagnosis and treatment plan and make intelligent referrals. 4. Know and understand the etiology, pathogenesis and complications of common oral and dental diseases. 5. Perform minor oral surgery to treat conditions related to the dentoalveolar region. |
| ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
| Integrated assessment.
In order to assess whether the exit-level outcomes have been achieved formative and summative assessments are done throughout the study period. These include the taking of biopsies of four cases handled personally, performing literature search and submitting manuscripts on the relevant pathologies. A year mark is complied which, in combination with a 3 hour theoretical examination, determines the final combined mark for the course. A qualifier must have, through the above assessment procedures, proved that s/he has achieved the NQF level 7 standards. |

| The Faculty maintains a bank of external examiners as approved by Council, with the necessary knowledge, academic qualifications and clinical/practical expertise and national and international standing, from which the external examiners are appointed. |
| CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS |
| Staff members of the Department of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery of the Faculty of Dentistry with the necessary academic qualifications and experience are used as internal assessors. |
