PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The purpose of this qualification is the refining and integrating of management abilities, over the whole range of core disciplines, for practising senior managers, by making them lead and manage differently than the traditional approaches of the past with regard to the challenges of the twenty-first century.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

1. Successful completion of any recognised bachelors degree or equivalent, and

2. A minimum of 3 (three) years practical management experience.

General outcomes:

On completion of the MBA program the participant should be able to:

deal with the core dynamics of the various managerial fields with an insight befitting a degree on Master's level;

apply this insight in an integrative manner in complex managerial situations, involving a number of fields;

put such integration ability into practice with sufficient quality and originality to effectively add value on a senior level in any organisation; and thus

perform as a manager leader, empowered with a mindset, skills and ethical foundation appropriate for the twenty first century."

Dealing with managerial knowledge

1. The ability to scientifically collect, select and critically evaluate data in order to produce managerial information relevant to a business issue, with the objective of taking a correct decision or action.

2. The ability to enhance the above-mentioned decision or action by bringing to bear upon it, the participant's unique insight, intuition and innovative capacity.

3. Effective integration and implementation of the above in order to add value to the business organisation and ultimately contribute towards economic growth.

Development of managerial skills

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Dealing with managerial knowledge:

Specific mark allocation out of the total awarded in individual and group assignments, for the effective utilisation of information sources on a level expected of a senior manager according to industry standards.

Progress in this regard is controlled and evaluated in each examination.

This culminates in the requirements set for the mini-dissertation, management report, or strategic thinking project, at the conclusion of the MBA programme.

Marks allocation for own inputs into the individual assignments.

Open book examinations eliminate credit (marks) for reproduction without own inputs.

Marks allocation for reasoned, logical conclusions and recommendations in:

individual assignment

group assignments

examinations

mini-dissertation, or

management report, or

strategic thinking project.

Marks allocation done according to accepted international standards.

Development of managerial skills:

Integrated assessment

1. The entire program is based on continuous evaluation throughout each semester, but also at the end of the semester. The purpose of this ongoing, integrated assessment is to ensure that the participant is successful in mastering all of the information, methods, processes and approaches covered in the full spectrum of managerial disciplines and associated decision support aids, required in industry from senior levels of management.

2. The participant must demonstrate applied competence in the core dynamics of the various managerial fields; the ability to apply these insights in practical, complex managerial situations; and be able to put such integration ability into practice in such a manner that value is created in the business organisation.

3. Assessment criteria to evaluate the participants acquired competences described in the above two sections, include the following:

Participants are obliged to function as members, as well as leaders, of syndicate groups resulting in continuous peer assessment and feedback.

They are continuously involved in the preparation and submission of both individual, as well as group assignments leading to lecturer evaluation and feedback of their demonstrated competence in mastering, synthesising, and applying data, information, knowledge, insights and intuition in a variety of actual managerial situations and challenges.

At the end of each semester, their ability to draw together, in a culminating fashion, all of the divergent elements of the learning experience, and to apply this to the challenging questions set in the paper, is tested in integrated examinations. These examinations again, test their competence in identifying, evaluating and applying relevant information; refining this with their own developed intuition and insights, to arrive at reasoned, logical conclusions, recommendations and managerial decisions/actions.

In the final semester, the participant's ability to conduct scientific research by means of investigation, analysis, deliberation and presentation, is evaluated in one of three formats:

a mini-dissertation

a management report

a strategic thinking project.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Generic arrangements:

Any bachelors degree would allow entrance to the MBA qualification.

The MBA programme allows the successful candidate to continue with the
Ph.D. degree.

Specific arrangements:

Successful completion of the Bachelor in Business Administration (PU for CHE) results in exemption from the modules of the first year of the MBA programme, provided that all such modules are subsequently passed.

Exemption is granted for modules passed in a MBA programme at another business school of a South African university.

MODERATION OPTIONS

As stated in "Criteria for the registration of assessors", internal as well as international external moderators are used: In addition to this, in order to ensure the maintenance and improvement of the quality level of this programme, the following processes are utilised:

annual participant questionnaires establishing the level of satisfaction with the quality and relevancy of the programme;

market research surveys in the business fraternity to establish future management development requirements;

a global survey, every five years, covering the top sixty international business schools, on the composition and content of MBA curricula, is conducted;

all new study material is evaluated by the Bureau for Academic Support Services of the university, for didactic effectiveness

no study material is released without the stamp of approval of the Quality Assurance Panel of the university;

external, international moderators from business schools world-wide are appointed for every module of the programme; acting as independent quality controllers and external examiners;

from time to time, the entire university is exposed to an international quality audit, under the auspices of CHEPS.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Internal as well as international external moderators/assessors are utilised.

The selection criteria for their appointment, consist of the following:

a faculty member of a business school of good repute;

an expert in the particular academic field;

the ability to contribute to the high quality image of the programme;

must add value in the sense of serving as a "global antenna " for new developments;

be willing to put in the required effort.

REREGISTRATION HISTORY

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.

NOTES

The Magister in Bedryfsadministrasie and the Masters in Business Administration by means of the Telematic Learning System of the University is one MBA-degree offered by two delivery routes, namely:

a residential route delivered mainly in Afrikaans; and

a Telematic Learning System route delivered mainly in English.

Submissions for interim registration are made for both "qualifications" as it was recorded as two qualifications in 1998.

These qualifications will be realigned to what the CHE has termed Category C qualifications to comply with the HEQSF.
