PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
1. To empower students with graduate knowledge of concepts, structures, models, theories, principles, skills, research, methodologies and applied competence to pursue rewarding careers in the changing economic and business environment of the new millennium.

2. To provide South Africa with graduates who are competent in a range of sub-disciplines, but specialising in Business Communication.

3. To assist and enable the learner to develop his/her intellectual and moral capacity to understand the economic and business environment, to think critically and innovatively and to build a foundation for further specialisation. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Endorsed Senior Certificate issued by the South African Certification Board with complete University exemption or recognised conditional exemption. An E-symbol in Mathematics (HG) or a D-symbol (SG) is required. Additional entry requirements for the different B.Com. degrees are set by Senate from time to time.

Recognition of prior learning
Prospective students who do not meet these requirements, may be considered by the Committee for Acknowledgement of Prior Learning on the basis of interviews, portfolio's and/or entrance examinations to identify experiential learning obtained in the workplace, quantitative skills and motivation.

Any credits earned on relevant levels obtained at other tertiary education institutions will be evaluated by the Committee for Acknowledgement of Prior Learning.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
1. Learners should provide evidence of: competencies, abilities, insight, knowledge and skills via a range of formative and summative assessment methods, such as portfolio 's, simulations, case studies, workplace assessments, written and oral test and examinations.

2. By completing a project/case study and communicating the results, learners will demonstrate problem solving, teamwork, leadership, self-discipline, integrity and commitment, research and communication skills as well as technology literacy.

3. By requiring reports on general as well as specific subject related topics, learners will demonstrate their active interest in their study-field by exposure to business journals and magazines as well as the daily business press, in order to maintain competence and keeping abreast of the changing economic environment.

4. Through a range of case studies and a project, the learners will demonstrate their entrepreneurial knowledge, skills and values in real-life simulations.

5. Through group discussions, tests and examinations in Business Ethics (two fundamental modules (8 credits each), the learners, will provide evidence of employment seeking skills (CV's and interview skills), their own values and personal paradigm as well as responsible citizenship, respect for God 's creations, his/her fellow man, authority and sensitivity to the environment and the socio-economic needs of the multi-cultural world.


Integrated assessment:

During the course of study, the progress of the learner is assessed by a variety of appropriate formative and summative methods, to supply evidence that the purposes of the qualifications as a whole have been achieved, by means of:
  • Written tests and examinations;
  • Oral tests and examinations;
  • Case studies/mini dessertation;
  • Practical, individual and syndicate projects;
  • Verbal presentations. 

  • INTERNATIONAL COMPARABILITY 
    Graduates with above average marks enjoy access and recognition of their status into universities globally. The result of international peer evaluation of research in our focus area of specialisation, reflects in the contents of applicable modules. Agreements with several European and American Universities exist to enhance exchange programmes between the university and other universities. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    1. The B.Com. qualification articulates vertically with the eligibility to apply to enter level 8 qualifications, specifically the Masters qualifications within the learners 'selected specialist discipline.

    2. The B.Com. qualification prepares the graduate for a career in the local and global economic business, communication environment.

    3. The B.Com. qualification gives the student access to related studies at other higher education institutions.

    4. Articulation with other tertiary institutions is possible through credits earned for applicable exit level outcomes achieved. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Internally the process goes through three phases: In the first phase the internal examiners give a mark which is based on a selection of assessment methods as well as integrated assessment. In the second phase a module co-ordinator takes responsibility for moderation of the assessment methods and outcomes.

    Finally, the faculty examination committee evaluates the learner 's performance by reviewing the modules, years of study completed and total credits earned as well as the groups' performance according to the specific module pass norm. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    1. All internal assessors are members of the academic staff of the Potchefstroom University for CHE and received training through the compulsory New Lectures Programme. The minimum qualifications of assessors is an appropriate M.Com / MA / MSc degree.

    2. All external assessors are senior colleagues in the relevant field of study of other South African Universities or are leading practitioners in their field of study.
