| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| The (first) purpose of the qualification is to acknowledge the contributions made by suitable candidates, who by way of submission of published work of the highest standard and subjected to critical peer evaluation, have shown their excellence over a sustained period of time in a particular field of food and beverage science.
The (second) purpose of the qualification is to reward such candidates who have contributed substantially to knowledge in a particular field of food and beverage science. |

| MSc in Food Science, MSc Agric or equivalent.
Other qualifications: PhD(Food Science) or equivalent qualification approved by the Senate for this purpose. Specific additional requirements: Candidates in possession of the PhD (Food Science) or equivalent degree for at least five years or when in possession of a MSc in Food Science or equivalent degree for a period of at least seven years. |

| The DSc (Food Science) graduate will have the following outcomes:
a) Expert and advanced knowledge of the chosen field of study as indicated by a sustained series of scientific work and publications of the highest quality and which show that the candidate has contributed substantially to a particular field of Food and Beverage Science. b) Shown to be an internationally recognised expert in his particular field of Food and Beverage Science as shown by his/her ability to do independent research withstanding international intellectual scrutiny. c) Have contributed to original knowledge in the field of study. d) Synthesised and evaluated information autonomously. e) Made sound evaluations on the basis of independently generated criteria. f) Communicate fully and professionally with other colleagues working in the field. The DSc (Food Science) graduate will demonstrate: a) Intellectual independence b) Mature and sound judgement, accountable and reliable assessment of the views of others. c) Transcendence of personal prejudice and/or parochial views. d) High levels of self-reflexivity and adaptability. e) An enquiring mind and an innovative spirit. f) Adherence to professional or self-defined ethics and academic integrity. g) Dedication to the ideals of scholarship. |

| Critical assessment of the candidate's published work submitted for purposes of the degree DSc Food Science.
Integrated assessment: Candidates must submit examples of work published in scientific journals, magazines, pamphlets or books freely available to the public which has been subjected to refereed criticism by experts in the field of expertise. |

| The University of Stellenbosch has a system of external peer review and evaluation of departments. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the departments contributing to this programme.
In addition to two or more internal examiners (which will usually be staff members of the University of Stellenbosch) standard University regulations require that one or more external examiners of international scholarly repute have to assess doctoral dissertations. The reports on the doctoral dissertation submitted by the internal and external examiners are considered by the faculty board (usually acting on the advice of an expert faculty committee specially constituted for each individual doctoral dissertation) and approved by Senate. |
| CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS |
| The academic staff of the University of Stellenbosch will be used in a manner which conforms to the quality assurance system of the University.
