PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the Masters Degree is to increase the capacity of person appropriately qualified in the field of Occupational Therapy:
  • to take up leadership roles in the profession, and
  • to be competent to carry out research in Occupational Therapy.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of prior learning:

    Learners entering the M.Sc (OT) degree programme will be assumed to have the following prior learning:

    * B.Sc. OT or B. Occupational Therapy degree. (4 years)

    * In exceptional cases, occupational therapy with a diploma qualification, and employed in the health care sector with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience may be admitted if in the opinion of the department, they are deemed competent to pursue study at this level.

    As part of the research process students have to identify and solve problems independently. This research process develops students' critical thinking skills.

    The programme provides students with opportunities to interact with other researchers, organisations, and institutions etcetera.

    The programme provides students with opportunities to structure, plan and manage themselves and their activities.

    Students are required to carry out an in-depth complex research project.

    5. Communicating effectively:

    Students have the opportunity to communicate within a group situation and/or an individual basis (verbal and written).

    6. Using science and technology effectively and critically:

    Students have to make extensive use of up to date information technology and resources.

    7. Contributing to the personal development of the learner:

    The experience of undertaking a complex research project over an extended period of time develops personal attributes and skills at all levels.

    Integrated assessment procedures:

    M.Sc. (OT) degree is assessed by thesis only. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    It leads to specialised professional training and/or PhD. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    External moderation of the course will be done by external moderators appointed by the Department of Occupational Therapy on an annual basis the University Senate. The moderation bodies are both the Council for Higher Education and the Health Professions Council of South Africa, P O Box 205, Pretoria 0001. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    An assessor must be a registered member of the Professional Board of Occupational Therapy and should have at least two to five years experience in the particular field of O.T. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
