PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • To increase the capacity of Home Economics teachers appropriately qualified in Home Economics and those teachers not appropriately qualified but teaching Home Economics.
  • Retraining of in-service Home Economics teachers to operate and function at school level using their diverse skills and knowledge across the 12 learning areas.
  • Provide access for the implementation of life long learning as learners in this programme. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Teachers who have a three-year or four-year post matriculation, Home Economics education qualifications.
  • A teacher who has taught Home Economics at secondary level for 5 years with no post matric Home Economics qualification, but as a three year or four post matriculation education qualification. The 5 years will allow teachers to acquaint themselves with the content as it applies to high school level.

    Teachers with this diploma will master a high level of very specialised knowledge and skills. The need in all levels of educational institutions and government for competent teachers with sound and up to date educational practices and knowledgeable of latest policies is important and crucial for the development of the region and the country to be able to draw on persons skilled in this educational area.
    Upon completion of the Further Diploma in Human Ecology Education learners should:

    1. Interpret needs of the individual and families and communities concern for their well-being.
    2. Facilitate learning by translating theory into practice
    3. Utilises change strategies and processes to initiate change
    4. Have knowledge and understanding of latest trends in Human Ecology content
    5. Gain the necessary theoretical and practical ability to integrate Home Economics information across the 12 learning areas.
    6. To demonstrate the competencies to plan integrated learning area OBE lessons
    7. Understand and be able to respond to the debate on change and the role of Home Economics in the new educational dispensation. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated assessment procedures:

    Modules will be evaluated on a continuous assessment basis. Formative assessment consisting of various kinds of portfolios, assignments, research essays provided for feedback and mentoring. Summative assessment will be formal examination. External moderators for each module grouping are appointed by the department which is ratified by the Faculty Management Committee and by Senate. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Learners who complete the Further Diploma in Human Ecology Education could enrol for the Postgraduate Diploma in Human Ecology.

    It is further recommended that students who have completed the Further Diploma in Human Ecology Education could to gain entrance into the B.Ed. programme as offered by the Education Faculty. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    External moderation of the course in the final years, and assessment of student progress will be done by external moderators appointed by the Department on an annual basis and approved by Senate. Internal moderation will occur through the Department. The moderation body is the Council for Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    An assessor must at least have a Hons or Masters degree and at east two to five years experience in the particular field of Human Ecology. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006; 2009; 2012; 2015.
