PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary aim of the postgraduate programme is to provide the student with advanced theoretical knowledge in at least three subject areas within the Human Ecology study field. In the selection and composition of the courses, the student's background knowledge and interest are taken into account. The student can choose from the available courses and together with the lecturers responsible develop a programme that will fulfil their needs.

Emphasis is placed on the development of self-discipline and perseverance in the handling and execution of two literature studies and a research project which includes the formulation and solution of a research problem.

Through participation and completion of the Masters programme the opportunity exists for students to improve their critical thinking.

To be admitted to the course a candidate shall:

* have obtained a B.A. (Human Ecology) (480 credits)
* have obtained a Further Diploma in Human Ecology Education or completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Ecology. (120 credits)
* B.A./B.Sc. Home Economics/Family and Consumer Sciences/Family Ecology from other tertiary institutions. (480 credits)

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
The student with a post graduate qualification this nature will master a high level of very specialised Human Ecology related knowledge and academic skills not usually within the capacity of graduates of first degrees and further diplomas in Human Ecology. The need in all levels of society for specialised Human Ecology practitioners with sound Primary Health Care and Public health practices and policies is particularly pertinent and increasing and it is crucial for the development of the country locally and internationally to be able to draw on persons skills in Human Ecology discipline. Therefore the learners should be able to demonstrate:
  • Specialist knowledge in a chosen area completed with broad interdisciplinary knowledge allowing responsible and authoritative independent research and problem-solving at a community and national level.
  • Mastering of the relevant literature and the ability to write a scientific report of good scientific standard.

    * Display specialised scholastic and advanced research skills in resource management and Human Ecology and perform a full range of advanced procedures in complex, variable and highly specialised contexts.

    * Communicate effectively, in both oral and written modes, with peers and the broader community using the appropriate structure, style and graphic support.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    Integrated assessment procedures:

    The Faculty has adopted a Continuous Assessment System. Assessment consists of a number of assessment events administered throughout the year and a variety of assessment instruments are used (for example, practical reports, project reports, oral presentations), and a mini-thesis and examination in the core courses. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This programme articulates with the Postgraduate Diploma. Human Ecology graduates may proceed after completion of the Masters programme to more advanced studies in Human Ecology. The possibility of allowing specialisation in specific interest areas, thereby opening up further advanced study options. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    External moderation of the course in the final years, and assessment of student progress will be done by external moderators appointed by the Department on an annual basis and approved by Senate. Internal moderation will occur through the Department. The moderation body is the Council for Higher Education. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    An assessor must at least have a Hons or Masters degree at least two to five years experience in the particular field of Human Ecology.
