PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To offer a postgraduate diploma in law, rather than an LLM degree, in circumstances where a student does not hold an LLB degree or its equivalent, or where a student wishes to complete coursework only and not to engage in the writing of any mini-dissertation, or where the coursework content is practical rather than academic. The postgraduate diploma will add to the skills base of students, building on prior knowledge obtained in the LLB or an equivalent degree.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
Horizontally, some courses passed towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Law may be used as credits for the LLM degree upon converting from the former to the latter. Vertically, a person in possession of the LLB degree plus Postgraduate Diploma in Law may, in appropriate circumstances, be allowed to continue with LLD studies. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
External moderation of the course in the final years, and assessment of student progress will be done by external moderators appointed by the Department on an annual basis and approved by Senate. Internal moderation will occur through the Department. The moderation body is the Council for Higher Education. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
The current senior lecturing staff of the Faculty of Law, the majority of whom hold doctors/masters degrees in law, will continue to act as internal assessors. External assessors will continue to be selected senior colleagues from the other SA universities specialising in the field concerned, as a general rule also holding doctors/masters degrees in law.
