PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the PhD degree is to provide learners with a professional qualification and to equip them with advanced doctoral knowledge in the field of the endorsement which will allow them to contribute to the body of knowledge in that field and to produce competent researchers who are able to supervise research. To produce competent administrators, managers, economists, industrial psychologists, accountants and political scientists for self-employment and employment at senior levels in the public and private sectors. It also provides opportunities for continued personal and intellectual growth.

The PHDC graduate is able to:

1. Manage the application of advanced knowledge and apposite skills in the field of endorsement and in an interdisciplinary context;

2. Undertake advanced research independently and in a morally responsible way;

5. Publish independently;

6. Communicate effectively using language skills in the mode of a thesis and articles;

7. Practice as an accountant, economist, industrial psychologist, political analyst or management consultant; and

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
A comprehensive range of assessment criteria will be used to determine learner achievement. The overall criteria will include, but will not be confined to:

1. Mastery of advanced knowledge in the chosen field of the endorsement;

2. Production of a dissertation of sufficient quality to pass examination;

3. Contribution to the existing body of knowledge in the field of the endorsement;

4. Acceptance of an article for publication in a refereed journal;

5. Competence in the skills of managing the dynamics of interdisciplinarity in respect of problem-solving supportive of reconstruction and development.

6. Sensitivity in respect of cultural diversity and gender issues pertaining to research and knowledge application.

7. Applying research methodology in a morally responsible way appropriate to the field of the endorsement.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT

Continuous assessment through supervision of the research and production of the thesis. Summative assessment through examination of the thesis, an oral examination and submission of an article to a refereed journal.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
For the PhD qualification, the internal assessor has to have a minimum of a Doctoral degree and publications in the field of the endorsement. The external assessor has to have a minimum of a Doctoral degree and research experience and a list of publications in the field being examined.

As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
