PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

* To equip students with a comprehensive set of specialised and focussed performance skills;

* To extend and deepen the students technical skills and knowledge of the repertoire, with regard to the chosen instrument or voice;

*To ensure that South Africa has sufficient specialist music practitioners by providing students with opportunities for shaping their performing skills at a high level of artistic fulfilment.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

Senior Certificate with Matriculation Endorsement or equivalent university admission qualification.

BMus Degree, BA(with Music) Degree or a performers 's Licentiate, with appropriate additional studies, or a qualification that is regarded as equivalent by Senate.

An audition on the chosen instrument or for the voice is held to assess adequate potential as performer.

Specific Outcomes:

The HLMP student will have:

1. advanced technical and solo skills with regard to the chosen instrument or voice, demonstrating a high level of professionalism;
2. specialised knowledge and skills which include the interpretation and evaluation of different musical editions, historical practice and stylistic approaches.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. The assesment of creative, performance and technical skills takes the form of practical public evaluation

2. Competence and ability in this area are demonstrated if the student is able to show a high degree of proficiency in the specific skills taught and in their application in a practical performance context.

Integrated Assessment:

Public performances are presented by students to allow assessment of their ability to integrate the practical skills and academic knowledge acquired in all previous modules.

MODERATION OPTIONS

The University of Stellenbosch has a system of external peer review and evaluation of departments. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.

External examiners/assessors are nominated in each field of practical specialisation in the programme and their appointment is subject to the approval by the Faculty Board in the faculty of Arts
