The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
a) Knowledge of chemistry at more advanced level than the Bsc. Level
b) Ability to interpret, evaluate and manipulate basic scientific information and results and to present them orally;
c) Basic chemical skills required in governmental and industrial laboratories and furthermore to introduce them to chemical research;
d) Good chemical skills that will enable them to teach the subject well at high schools and at Ordinary Diploma level in the Technikons
e) Opportunity to proceed into further postgraduate programme; 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
B SC. Degree in Chemistry or Higher National Diploma from Technikons with major in Chemistry.

The learner will be able to:

4.Exhibit a detailed knowledge and understanding of a range of discipline specific theories and comprehends both the interactions between chemistry and the natural science environment and the multi-disciplinary nature of science.

5. Demonstrate the ability to work independently in developing clear and deeper understanding of the specific areas of the subject.

6. Manage data and information effectively, through their collection, storage, analysis, synthesis, presentation and critical evaluation, using a variety of analytical methods and techniques.

Assessment Criteria:

The Learner can:

1. Participate in class discussions; write and present mini-seminars; prepare assignments; participate effectively in oral presentation.

2. Submit assignments and reports in an acceptable format according to clear guidelines and deadlines.

3. Participate and interact intelligently in class discussions and presentations and in practical situations.

4. Critically read, interpret and analyze literature; participate in group discussions.

5. Do independent reading and information retrieval in the library and the internet; work with reduced supervision and show initiative.

6. Prepare assignments; improve computer literacy

7. Write a project proposal, highlighting the research problem

  • Write up the results in clear, concise and acceptable manner.

    Integrated Assessment:

    Formative assessment in the form of continuous assessment through assignments, tests, seminars and summative assessment. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    None internally, but qualifiers will be able to do further studies at other University. With other qualification (e. g., Bio-chemistry, etc), vertical MSc. and Doctorate is possible.

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    All assessors are experts in their discipline working in the University or Research Institute and will usually have a Ph. D in Chemistry.
