PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
The purpose of this programme is to train computer scientists with detailed technical knowledge required of software engineers. In addition to technical knowledge this program is intended to instil in learners an ability to learn on their own and the ability to pursue more advanced research.
Learners who obtain an honours degree in computer science will be able to apply this knowledge to work in every sector of the South African economy, but graduates of this programme should be particularly suited to work in the telecommunications industry. |

Recognition of prior learning:
Any of the following constitute sufficient recognition of prior learning for admission to this programme: 1. A Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) from any recognized tertiary institution. 2. A software portfolio, research reports, or other technical portfolio and a satisfactory oral examination by at least two staff members of the Department of Computer Science. |

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
Assessment Criteria:
Assessment of the learners knowledge is performed using a final examination per module equally weighted with evaluation of practical work and class tests for that module. Assessment includes evaluation of a research project with a written paper describing the project work performed. Additional aspects tested will include: 1. ability to write simple research proposals 2. ability to formulate an hypothesis 3. ability to work on one 's own 4. ability to write about ideas in a clear and concise manner 5. ability to draw correct conclusions and apply these to an hypothesis Formative Assessment: Summative Assessment: |
ARTICULATION OPTIONS |
Verftical articulation will be possible for those qualifiers who wish to proceed with a masters degree. |
MODERATION OPTIONS |
Co-supervisors
Moderation is performed by suitably qualified external examiners evaluating the final examination for each module of the programme. |
CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS |
All assessors for a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) must possess a minimum qualification of Masters of Science in Computer Science. Assessors for particular modules may also be registered if they have a suitable qualification accompanied by relevant experience in the subject matter as assessed by the Head of Department and two other staff members. |
