| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| The first purpose of the programme is to provide qualifiers with graduate-level knowledge, skills and competency appropriate to a vocation as a quantity surveyor in the construction and property industries. Moreover, the programme provides a foundation for further intellectual development and opportunities for gainful employment and rewarding contributions to society.
The second purpose of the programme is to establish, maintain and disseminate a dynamic research based body of knowledge pertaining to quantity surveying in South Africa, in order to ensure ongoing development in the quality of management and leadership in the quantity surveying profession. The third purpose of the qualification is to provide the construction professions in South Africa with graduates who meet the academic requirements for professional registration. |
| LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
| An applicant for this programme should:
(i) be capable of reading and writing English and another language, (ii) be proficient in algebra, geometry and trigonometry, (iii) and should possess demonstrable knowledge and skills in at least three other discrete subject areas such as, but not limited to, Physical Science, Biology, Geography, and History; all at a level equivalent to that required for the award of a matriculation or equivalent certificate with university exemption. Senior certificate with Matriculation Exemption or Equivalent university admission qualification RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (e.g. Work or field experience (if applicable) Prior learning at other universities or technikons in which relevant material may be recognised for credit up to a limit of half the degree requirements. The University is prepared to test candidates wishing to enter through non-traditional means, to establish whether, in the opinion of Senate, the person is prepared for degree studies in which case an application will be made for conditional exemption. |

| (a) Critical cross-field outcomes (generic to all teaching and learning)
The graduate is competent to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with built environment audiences and the community at large. The graduate is critically aware of the impact of built environment activity on society and the environment, and to exercise the appropriate judgement in the provision of professional services. The graduate is competent to work effectively as an individual, in teams and in multidisciplinary environments showing leadership and performing critical functions. The graduate is critically aware of the need to act professionally and ethically, to take responsibility and to exercise judgement commensurate with knowledge and experience. (b) General Outcomes (Contextually demonstrated general knowledge, skills and values of the programme) The graduate is competent to apply knowledge of mathematics and quantitative methods, technology, management, economics, finance and law from first principles to solve built environment problems. The graduate is competent to perform creative, procedural and non-procedural analysis of built environment problems, systems, products or processes. The graduate is competent to undertake investigations and data analysis. The graduate is competent to use appropriate problem solving methods, skills and tools, which include the use of computer packages, for computation, analysis, modelling, simulation, and information handling. (c) Specific Outcomes, including professional outcomes, contextually demonstrated) The graduate should be able to completely undertake advanced quantity surveying activities relating to: management and preparation of tender and contractual documents for construction projects; undertaking the contractual management of construction projects; preparing estimates of cost and undertaking the financial management of construction projects; evaluating economic issues concerning the construction and property sectors at both a micro and macro level; evaluating alternative property development investment options; communicating with construction and property professionals concerning spatial concepts, economic, financial and contractual issues, and construction assembly problems. |

| (a) Can the student produce documents and reports and deliver an oral presentation that appropriately describes a built environment problem, methodology to solve the problem, and solutions to the problem?
Does the student provide advice and solutions that benefit society in a way that improve the quality of life? Are the solutions economically viable and do they take cognisance of the protection of the environment? Can the student produce output that demonstrates clearly own contribution and the benefits of interaction with others in solving complex problems? Does the student understand the need to exercise ethics in the workplace and to have an appreciation of professional practice? (b) Can the student provide quantitative and qualitative solutions to a variety of complex built environment problems? Can the student successfully provide solutions to complex built environment problems that are fit for purpose, innovative and economically viable? Can the student translate a built environment problem into a well-planned solution that is devised to provide quantitative and qualitative data that can be analysed to provide a solution? Does the student have a good working knowledge of analytical methods, as well as a higher level of computer literacy? (c) Can the student demonstrate competency in dealing with issues and problems relating to the economic, financial, technological, assembly and legal aspects of the construction sector? Integrated assessment All major courses in the programme carry the requirement for students to submit a major project specifically designed to test applied competence in the outcomes in an integrated manner. In all of these assignments, it is necessary for students to demonstrate competence in specific, general and critical cross-field outcomes. Assessment is conducted via a combination of formal examinations, group and individual projects and assignments, as well as by written submissions and oral presentations. In addition to internal examination, these courses are subject to external examination by independent external examiners. In the course Quantity Surveying 3, students are required to participate with the architectural students in a Simulated Office Practice. In terms of this, students put into practice skills acquired from a range of subjects and simulate the services provided in practice by professional quantity surveyors in servicing the architectural design function. Quantity surveying services provided include the provision of cost estimates, design-cost advice, contract documentation, and advice relating to financial and contractual matters. Students are required to present their work (written and orally) to, and respond to queries from, a committee of assessors. For the course Thesis, students are required to undertake detailed research activity to address a problem relating to the construction or property industries. This course, drawing on skills previously acquired, entails the selection of a research problem, preparation of a research proposal, conducting empirical research, analysis of findings, drawing conclusions and making recommendations, and the presentation of a research report. |
