PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this qualification is to train to a higher level, computer scientists who will be able to work as academics at both universities and other tertiary institutions in this country and to lead major research activities in both the private and public sectors. These computer scientists will be able to work in any sector of the South African economy.

A Masters degree in Computer Science or any other indication of sufficient prior learning that can be demonstrated and assessed.

Assessment criteria will be based on testing the learnrs knowledge of the chosen field of study and on his/her thesis. In addition other aspects that will be tested are:

1. ability to write research proposals

2. ability to formulate an hypothesis

3. ability to work on one 's own

4. ability to collect and relate published contributions

5. ability to develop and utilize new ideas

6. ability to write about these ideas in a clear and concise manner

7. ability to design and manage large software or analysis projects

8. ability to draw the correct conclusions and apply these to the hypothesis

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    Vertical articulation will be possible for those qualifiers who wish to proceed with a post-doctoral degree.
