PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

To broaden students' frontiers of knowledge in the social work field by helping them to gain greater mastery of theory, values and advanced skills of working with individuals, families, groups and communities from diverse backgrounds.

To enhance their ability for independent search and analysis of new and abstract data and situations using a wide range of techniques appropriate to the field.

To further develop their ability to engage in constructive professional debate and arguments, which should result in the production of coherent, professional reports.

To broaden their knowledge and sharpen their skills in administration and management as well as policy formulation, analysis and implementation.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

The degree of BSW and satisfies the Head of Department that she/he is competent to undertake the programme.

Any other suitable qualification and/or experience to be approved by the Head of Department.

On completing the Honours programme students should be able to:

1. Demonstrate a broader and deeper knowledge and understanding of the philosophy of social work.

2. Show greater ability to work efficiently with individuals, families, groups, organisations and communities using
a variety of techniques and theoretical approaches.

3. Demonstrate advanced skills in policy formulation, analysis, evaluation and implementation.

4. Undertake research and produce a scientific report of high standard.

5. Demonstrate the ability to work as a member of a team and to assume leadership.

Integrated assessment

A variety of assessment methods will be used including:
Assignments, research report, practical work assessment, oral presentation and written examinations.

Besides getting absorbed into the work force in various welfare organisations as well as industry, the graduate can pursue further postgraduate studies through one of the available streams viz

MODERATION OPTIONS

Internal moderation by lecturers who present the modules.

External examiners to be appointed for all modules from other tertiary institutions.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

A minimum of a Masters degree and experience in the field of specialisation being assessed.
