PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the qualification is to provide opportunities for advanced directed research activity in a specialized area in English Studies, and to foster mature and scientific understanding of English studies supported by an independent competence in research.

  • Level 7: Bachelor of Arts (Honours)Degree in English or a related subject.
  • Advance knowledge of the paradigm shifts in the development of English studies.
  • Advanced and critical knowledge of the contributions of different theorists in English Studies.
  • Sophisticated ability to use critical analysis to solve problems and to make informed decisions through critical thinking.
  • Extensive and sophisticated knowledge of the current and past status of the humanities in south Africa, Ahica and the rest of the world.
  • Extensive knowledge of current affairs.
  • Functional knowledge of research activity.

    EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
    Exit Level Outcome:

    The qualifying learner will be able to undertake and complete successfully a scholarly report that will be a portfolio of relevant research and critical-analytical readings on a relevant topic in a specialised area in English studies, the report will be evidence of systematic and advanced knowledge in English studies.


    Specified Outcomes:

    1. The qualifying learner should demonstrate the ability to make use of the available resources to embark on directed research.
    2. The qualifying learner will be able to present a full dissertation which will be a report on research undertaken on an approved topic in a specialized area in English Studies. 

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    1.1 Critical understanding of advanced research techniques in English studies.
    1.2 Critical assessment of advanced research in English studies.
    1.3 Formal presentation of an approved proposal outlining the content and direction of research.

    2.1 Formal presentation of a full dissertation prepared during directed research.
    2.2 Formal presentation of a full dissertation which complies with applicable rules.
    2.3 Oral presentation of research findings to the Faculty Research Seminar.

    Integrated assessment:
  • Reading reports at phased intervals to facilitate the learner's progress through the course.
  • Independent research activity/project in the form of an examined dissertation.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
  • The qualification prepares the qualifying learner for formal entry into level of the NQF (Masters Programme).
  • The programming allows articulation in the form of inter-disciplinary research in languages, Communication, History and Fine Arts and Education.

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Internal and external moderation in accordance with Senate rules on the appointment of external moderators.

    Those criteria identified by the Education and Training Quality Assurance body.
