Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualification is, in the short and long term, of value both the learner and the society respectively. The purpose of the qualification is to:
  • Expose the learners to a range of empirical knowledge which will prepare them for advanced post-graduate studies in history;
  • Demonstrate a more advanced grade of competence in history in the vocational sphere;
  • Engage in an enabling and supervisory capacity in a range of a vocational directions as submitted by SAQA Field 02. 05 and 07;
  • Contribute to the social development of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa and the world by advancing the quality of citizenship through applied competencies in a range of situational activities in civic, public and private spheres. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience.

  • The qualification will empower learners with appropriate knowledge, skills and competencies in the discipline of history to enable them to make a meaningful contribution to society through the participation and application in the principles of good citizenship, which includes notions of professional work ethic, and social and practical tolerance.
  • Ability to design and write research proposals.
  • Ability to write well researched extended essays in specialised fields of History.

    Written and/or Oral Examinations.

    This qualification compares with the following international qualifications in terms of the range of competencies in the learning content offered. 

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification offers both possibilities of horizontal and vertical articulation.

    Horizontal Articulation:
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Arts and History, Level 8.
  • Bachelor of Arts Honours in Ancient History, Level 8.

    Vertical Articulation:
  • Master of Arts in History, Level 9.

    They exist in both the horizontal and vertical contexts.
    Horizontal: A possibility exists for articulation with other Honours qualification of the cognate fields within the Arts Faculty as well as in the Faculty of Social Sciences with Anthropology, Political Science etc. as well as similar Honours programmes in the Eastern Cape region, nationally and internationally.
    Vertical level: Articulation to Master's qualification in History or post graduate Diploma in Museology, Heritage Studies, and archival studies. Etc.
