PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

3.1 The first purpose is to provide qualifiers with advanced knowledge, skills and applied competence in the disciplines of Anthropology, Archeology, Communications, Criminology, Development Studies, Library and information Science, Political Science. Public Administration, Psychology, Social Work and Sociology to gain and engage in productive employment In high-level positions in enterprises in the academic, commercial, industrial and public sectors in the economy.

3 2 The second purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with advanced capacity to operationalise and document original scientific investigations/research that can withstand international intellectual scrutiny and contribute to the knowledge and insight of the afore-mentioned disciplines.

3.3 The third purpose of the qualification is to enable qualifiers to operationalise and document an advanced scientific investigation/research project in the form of a thesis on an approved topic within the afore-mentioned disciplines, that provides proof of original work and constitutes a distinct contribution to the body of knowledge and insight into the subject of the investigation/research.

An NQF level 8 qualification, including a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D), Doctor of Administration (D Admin), Doctor of Commerce (D Comm), Doctor of Science (D SC) and Doctor of Technology/Laureatus in Technology (D TecNLaur Tech) or equivalent qualifications in the afore-mentioned disciplines.

AD Soc Sc graduate is equipped with in-depth knowledge in complex and specialised areas and across specialised or applied areas of the afore-mentioned disciplines as well as intellectual independence and skills that include advanced study and research; the capacity for further research at an advanced level; capacity to deal with complexity, lacunae and contradictions in the knowledge base; confident selection of tools for the job; autonomous synthesizing of information; responses to problems that expand or redefine existing knowledge; independent evaluation of alternative approaches; accurate assessment, with justification of own and other's work; full professional communication with others in the field; working in a group towards defined outcomes; assuming leadership, negotiation, conflict resolution and effective motivation of others.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Write research proposals that indicate that learners are able to identify a problem or problems in human resources management, formulate a research problem and suggest solutions to the problem(s); formulate hypotheses; know, select and utilise research instruments that are relevant in the research of a specific problem in human resources management; select and use appropriate data analysis methods to interpret the findings of the investigation; conduct fieldwork during the actual investigation; evaluate and interpret findings; report the findings of the investigation and formulate recommendations that emanate from the findings; create a new model that can be applied to solve the problem investigated.

Identify and analyse different scientific procedures in terms of the problem being researched.

Critically read, interpret and analyse literature from different sources; search for literature on the identified research problem; compare the writings of different authors on the same related topic; synthesize reading material on the topic being researched; draw conclusions from different readings and indicate anomalies; create a theoretical framework provided by the literature review; create a new model/approach/theory that is applicable to the research problem; compile a complete bibliography.

Integrated assessment:

The integrated assessment procedure with regard to the research proposal consists of considerations and approval of it by a permanent standing committee of the Faculty Board, namely the Faculty Research Committee, then the Faculty Board and lastly the Senate.

The integrated assessment procedure with regard to the thesis consists of the thesis being examined and adjudicated by the appointed promoter(s), who acts/act as the internal examiner(s) and two external examiners.

The integrated assessment procedure with regard to the oral or written examination consists of the appointed internal examiner(s) submitting the examination paper(s) and having the paper(s) marked by the internal examiner(s) and moderated by the external examiners.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

At the entry -horizontal level: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D), Doctor of Administration (D Admin), Doctor of Commerce (D Comm), Doctor of Science (D SC.) and Doctor of Technology/Laureatus in Technology (D/Tech/Laur TEch) or equivalent qualifications in the afore-mentioned disciplines.

MODERATION OPTIONS

In the case of Psychology, the College of Psychology, established to function from 1 January 2000

It is recommended that the status quo with regard to the moderating body prevails, namely the appointment of two or more external examiners with NQF level 8 qualifications as well as research experience and publications in the aforementioned disciplines.
