Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Purpose:
  • To provide learners with a capacity for advanced study and research as well as with a depth of knowledge in a complex and specialised area.
  • To produce a thesis which can withstand international scrutiny and contribute to original knowledge in the field.
  • To provide South Africa with doctoral learners who can assume leadership while working in their respective groups and maintain full professional communication with other specialists in their fields.

    Rationale: 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Recognition of Prior Learning:
    A Master's qualification in Social Work from the University of Fort Hare or from any other institution inside or outside South Africa.
    Some years of experience in social work practice.

    Entry Requirements:
    The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Master of Arts Social Work, Level 9.

    1. Capacity to conduct further research at an advanced level.
    2. The capacity to continually redefine and expand existing knowledge in his/her area of specialisation.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
  • The standard of work the learner will be producing in the course of the study will be used to assess the learner's ability to conduct further research after obtaining this qualification.
  • Seminar presentations and presentations to the learner's internal supervisors will be used to assess this capacity.
  • How the learner will respond to problems he/she may encounter in the course of the study will be used to assess the learner's ability to appropriately respond to problems in his/her field of work.

    Integrated Assessment:
    Procedures to ensure that the purpose of qualification is achieved:
    Formatively, the learner's research proposal will have to be considered and approved by the Faculty Research Committee; after which the proposal will have to be submitted to the Faculty Board and the Senate for final approval;
    The internal supervisor will then have to continually monitor the work of the learner during the course of the study.
    Summatively, the completed work (dissertation) will be subjected to the scrutiny of two externally appointed examiners.

    This qualification compares with the following international qualifications in terms of the range of competencies in the learning content offered.
