PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The programme aims to develop specific skills and applied sciences in agriculture and rural development. The learners will be exposed to holist approach of understanding and interpreting rural development problems and providing appropriate engineering solutions.

Learners will be able to define, understand and solve agricultural and rural development problems related to:

* Soil water conservation including small-scale irrigation

* Resource management and land use planning

* Rural transport, housing and water supply and waste management services

* Mechanization and selection of appropriate technologies

* Renewable energy and rural industries

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
1. Matriculation Exemption certificate of equivalent

2. First degree

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
1 . Ability to identify, assess, formulate and solve advanced problems related to rural development from the different domains of Agriculture and rural engineering
2. Demonstration of applied competence in the design of farm structures, appropriate farm machinery and renewable technologies
3. Demonstration of applied competence in the management of natural resources and rural services (electricity, water supply, soil conservation etc)
4. Be able to carry research, communicate effectively to the targeted rural community and be able to handle data (modelling) in computer, prepare and interpret scientific reports

Specify critical cross-field outcomes:

Cross-field outcomes will include those specified in the learning outcomes of approved modules in the programme and would include the following:

* Demonstration of an understanding of how agriculture and rural engineering contribute to the development of smallholder farmers and rural communities
* Ability to use scientific and engineering knowledge and skills to support responsible decisions making to real life rural problems.
* Ability to solve problems individual and as part of a project team
* Collecting, analysing, organising and critically evaluating information
* Communicating effectively in scientific presentations and to rural communities

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
A range of continuous formative methods including: prescribed practicals, tutorials, tests and written examinations. Seminars and Project work singly and in groups will also be used to assess whether the specified outcomes have been achieved.

The learners must prove their problem solving skills concerning rural engineering principles and must show that they have developed a broad understanding of rural development issues.

Integrated assessment incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the degree is achieved:

1. Work-place assessments

2. Written examinations

3. Oral examinations

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
