PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The first purpose of the qualification is to provide qualifiers with postgraduate-level knowledge, specific skills, and applied competence in general and specific areas of Soil Science that provide opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

The second purpose is to provide the Agricultural industry in South Africa, which under-pins all aspects of the economy, with significant numbers of graduates with the high levels of interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in soil science necessary for the identification and strategic solution of real-life problems facing the agricultural industry, including emphasis on small scale, emerging farmers.

The third purpose is to provide South Africa, and Eastern Cape in particular, with a cadre of highly competent researchers who will have clear and growing understanding of scientific developments in agricultural research and thus be able to be active participants in the generation and reconfiguration of knowledge so a to meet the ever changing horticultural needs of the South African society. The B.Sc. Agric. Hons in programme in Soil Science provides a certain measure of specialization and prepares the learner for research.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
A B.Sc. Agric degree or equivalent, or B.Sc. Agric. status where a learner may have another appropriate qualification and/or modules which together confer the B.Sc. Agric. status. An adequate background in Soil Science is necessary. The University rules (relating to admissions) in force at the time need to be consulted.
