PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

1. To enable students to acquire the necessary skills in the earth sciences, for addressing and solving problems in government, commerce and management of natural resources.
2. To enrich students with the fundamental concepts and skills for professional application in geology, hydrology and meteorology.
3. To demonstrate the importance, relevance and utilisation of geologic/hydrologic principles and skills.
4. To render practical training to students both in the field and within the Department.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

A matric exemption pass at E(HG) or D(SG) in Physical Science and any of the following subjects: Agricultural Science, Biology, Geography and Economics.

Matric pass at F or better (Higher Grade) or E or better (Standard Grade)

University bridging courses MAT 001 and MAT 023 should be taken by students who do not satisfy the mathematics requirements.

Recognition of prior learning:

Prior learning experience considered by the Department as relevant to Earth Sciences.

* Skills to identify, understand, assess and solve geologic and hydrological problems
* Ability to relate, evaluate, interpret and apply earth sciences concepts to actual life problems.

Specify critical cross-field outcomes:

* These arise from close interaction with other areas of studies related to the earth sciences and within a potential to catalyse the students' future employment opportunities, especially those fields within the School of Environmental Sciences which underpin planning, geographic and environmental/resource management capabilities.

* Also important are the fundamental and analytical skills to be applied frequently in solving associated earth sciences problems, arising from studies in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology, as well as in social and business studies.

* Assignments, presentations, tutorials and written tests and examinations in all the prescribed courses.
* A wide range of field practicals of geologic and hydrologic nature.

MODERATION OPTIONS

A method of internal peer moderation papers will be utilised before the papers are submitted for external moderation

In accordance with the University regulations, as much as possible, all modules will be externally assessed.

The comments from external examiners will be discussed with the Head of Department to ensure that the quality of the programme remains of an acceptable standard

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

* Internal Assessors: M.Sc or PhD in a field closely related to the Earth Sciences
* External Assessors: PhD in a field closely related to the Earth Sciences

* Internal assessors must be at least of the lecturer level
* External assessors must be at least of the senior lecturer level, with a minimum of 5 years university teaching experience in the relevant subject area.

* The external examiner must show an evidence of strong research work in the Earth Sciences.
* Experience as an external examiner will be an added advantage.
