PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

This qualification includes the various specialisations. Please refer to "Notes" for details on the specialisations.

1. To provide professional and scholarly training for those science, mathematics or technology educators who wish to continue course work with an area of applied research direct interest and relevance to their work, community or region.

2. To assist teachers in the relevant science and mathematic subject at all levels to improve their teaching and advance their career prospects.

3. To enable participants to gain a deep professional insight into the theory of science, technology and mathematics (STM) education and to address factors which affect the aims of teaching and learning STM

Bachelor of Science in Science Education

B.Ed (Hons) in Science / Mathematics.

Graduate science / mathematics teachers and or educators with at least three years of teaching experience.

Ability to identify researchable topics in STM education.

Ability to do literature search in connection with the area of specialization in STM education.

Relevant knowledge, skills and techniques required to conduct STM research findings.

This will consist of:

1. Research involving the completion of a thesis that contributes knowledge or understanding of knowledge in specialist area of study.

2. Continuous assessment involving oral seminar presentation, written assessment and written tests.

3. Final written examination on course work.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

Qualifications required:

Internal Assessors:
M,Sc; M.Ed (Sc.Ed), PhD, D.Ed

External Assessors:
PhD, D.Ed, M.Sc, M.Ed (Sc. Ed)

Career experience required:

Internal assessors must be at least of lecturer (or better) level, with at least five years teaching experience

External assessors must be at least of senior lecturer and a minimum of five years relevant teaching experience in the relevant subject area

Other criteria:

Must show evidence of active research work in related areas as a lecturer (internal)

Evidence of active research work in related area, a must of external examiner

Experience as external examiner, an added advantage
