| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| A qualified learner is technically competent in the effective and safe management of non coal types of mining production activities for mid and senior production and technical management. |
| LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
| Qualification at NQF level 6 in a mining discipline. |
| RECOGNISE PREVIOUS LEARNING? |
| N |
| QUALIFICATION RULES |
| The qualification will be awarded t the learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the specified competence, as detailed in the specific outcomes, has been achieved either through education and training in a recognised provider programme, or through the accumulation of expertise that complies with the stated specific outcomes |
| EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES |
| The qualified learner should have the engineering technical capability to effectively manage any non coal type of mining production operations at middle and senior management level. The qualified learner should also have the capability to meaningfully contribute to decisions making in the areas of rock mechanics and ventilation.
Core: 1. Plan mining production short, medium and long term activities at mid and senior level. 2. Plan mining resource requirements - short, medium and long term at mid and senior level. 3. Control use of mining machinery as required at mid and senior level. 4. Identify elementary mining machinery faults and design problems. 5. Maximise machinery utilisation in the mining environment. 6. Select and modify mining production layouts to suit conditions 7. Carry out feasibility studies for mining layouts 8. Identify mining hazardous conditions and layouts 9. Generate best practice mining layouts and systems 10. Apply minimum legal standards to mining activities 11. Install and optimise safe resource utilisation Fundamental: Elective: Experiential training at a non coal mining operation. Specified outcomes: The qualified learner should have the knowledge and technical capability to effectively: 1. Plan mining production short, medium and long term activities at mid and senior level on non coal mines 2. Plan mining resource requirements - short, medium and long term at mid and senior level. 3. Control use of mining machinery as required at mid and senior level. 4. Identify elementary mining machinery faults and design problems 5. Maximise machinery utilisation in the mining environment 6. Select and modify mining production layouts to suit conditions 7. Carry out feasibility studies for mining layouts 8. Identify mining hazardous conditions and layouts 9. Generate best practice mining layouts and systems 10. Apply minimum legal standards to mining activities 11. Install and optimise safe resource utilisation: 12. Lead the production team effectively 13. Handle labour problems effectively 14. Produce, read, interpret and utilise survey plans and sections 15. Produce, read, interpret and utilise geological plans and sections 16. Interpret valuation plans and reports 17. Interrelate technical disciplines for optimal production and safety 18. Write and present reports using it technology. |
| ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
| The qualified learner should provide evidence of the technical ability to meet the specific outcomes at mid management level on non coal mines through:
1. Operational skills: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the mine section planning process on non coal mines: 2. Resource planning including men, materials, machinery: 3. Machinery maintenance and utilisation: 4. Optimisation of short, medium and long term on non coal types of mining plans: 5. Identify geological features that impinge on mine planning and production 6. Determine profitability margins: 7. Apply best practice methods and layouts: 8. Monitor the services and detect faults in supply of water, electricity, compressed air, ventilation etc. 2. People management: 1. Leading a production team to reach production targets safely: 2. Motivate a production team to obtain target production: 3. Explain safety systems applicable to mines: 4. Communication across all levels and by all methods e.g. verbal, written, electronic. INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT: A range of formative and summative assessment methods and techniques in the form of written and practical examinations, verification tests for experiential training and projects where applicable. |
| ARTICULATION OPTIONS |
| Horizontally to B Tech Mining Engineering
BSc Mining Engineering Vertically to NQF qualificaiton at level 8 in mining field |
| MODERATION OPTIONS |
| Any subject at final exit level has to be moderated by an external appointed specialist applicable to the subject - This is according to the Sertec requirements. |
| CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS |
| As required by:
SERTEC, ECSA, MQA |
| NOTES |
| While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above). Where relevant, replacement information is shown in the table above. |

| PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION: |
| This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
