PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
A qualifying learner will be competent in the effective and safe management of the surveying required to be done on a mine and the mineral reserve evaluation required for a mine. This contributes to satisfy the need for suitable knowledgeable mine surveyors and mineral resource managers at middle and senior management in the mineral industry.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
NQF level 6 with skills in Surveying, Mineral Evaluation and Mine Economics at level 6.

QUALIFICATION RULES
The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence, as detailed in the specified outcomes, has been achieved, either through education and training in a recognised provider's learning programme, or through expertise that complies with the stated specified outcomes

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
1. Provides effective and safe product and management of the mine surveying and mineral reserve evaluation/control required to be done on a mine.

Specified outcomes:

1. Conduct and manage all the survey work that may be required on a mine.

2. Minimise mineral losses by establishing a suitable ore flow control system with the necessary sampling and calculation of ore flow control factors.

3. Manage the resources required for the normal running of a survey department on a mine.

4. Conduct and manage the evaluation of the mineral reserve of an operating mine.

5. Monitoring and accessing the minerals market.

Critical outcomes:

1. Conduct higher order survey work in order to control and manage a survey control network on a mine.

2. Manage the routine survey work conducted on a mine and the subsequent office work relating to survey and survey draughting

3. Ensure that all the prescribed plans for the mine are kept and updated as required by law.

4. Co-operate with mining management in the planning of mining excavations and the subsequent layouts of planned workings.

5. Identify possible hazardous conditions in the mine and planned layouts.

6. Ensure the survey and related office work is conducted in accordance with the legal requirements as stated by the applicable law in force at the point in time.

7. Plan and manage an effective sampling program to ensure the collection of representative samples in order to effectively:
  • Control the mineral content mined and
  • Evaluate the mineral reserve of the mine
  • Monitor the ore flow at its various stages to ensure that any losses of minerals mined will not go undetected.

    8. This is to be accomplished by means of sampling of the ore at its various stages of production/transportation and extraction with the necessary ore flow control factors to pinpoint sources of error.

    9. Lead the survey and sampling team effectively.

    10. Manage the survey office and its budget effectively.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
    1. Survey work required on a mine is carried out to the required accuracy in accordance with the legal requirements for mines.

    NOTES
While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above). Where relevant, replacement information is
    shown in the table above.

This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
