PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

A qualified learner is technically competent in the effective and safe management of surface mining production activities for mid and senior production and technical management.

The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence of the qualification, as detailed in the specified outcomes, has been achieved, either through education and training in a single providers learning programme, or through experience that complies with the stated specified outcomes

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES

The qualified learner should have the engineering technical capability to effectively manage any surface type of mining production operations at middle and senior management level.

The qualified learner should also have the capability to meaningfully contribute to decisions making in the areas of slope stability.

Core:

1. Plan mining production short, medium and long term activities at mid and senior level.

2. Plan mining resource requirements - short, medium and long term at mid and senior level.

3. Control use of mining machinery as required at mid and senior level.

4. Identify elementary mining machinery faults and design problems.

5. Maximise machinery utilisation in the mining environment.

6. Select and modify mining production layouts to suit conditions

7. Carry out feasibility studies for mining layouts

8. Identify mining hazardous conditions and layouts

9. Generate best practice mining layouts and systems

10. Apply minimum legal standards to mining activities

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Horizontally to B Tech Mining Engineering

BSc Mining Engineering

Vertically to qualification at NQF Level 8 in the mining field.

MODERATION OPTIONS

Any subject at final exit level has to be moderated by an external appointed specialist applicable to the subject - this is according to the SERTEC requirements.

While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above). Where relevant, replacement information is
shown in the table above.
