| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| Persons achieving this qualification will be eligible to register as interns with the Allied Health Service Professions Council, and as interns they will be able to render a service, including the prevention, cure and rehabilitation of disease and the promotion of health, as well as the application of primary health care principles and practices to both rural and urban societies, including the management of neuro-musculo-skeletal disorders. Following completion of the internship they will be competent and legally entitled, as granted by the appropriate authority, to practice independently as chiropractors, to conduct research in this field and to interact with other health-care professionals. |

1. A comprehensive case history and general and relevant regional examinations will be performed efficiently and with due sensitivity for the purpose of gathering information in order to determine the nature of the patient's problem. 2. A list of differential diagnoses will be generated and further tests identified through discussion with the clinician and carried out in order to reach a definitive diagnoses, where possible. 3. On the basis of the diagnosis, and the patient's psycho-social circumstances, a management programme will be devised, explained to the patient and implemented. * Psychomotor skills at an advanced level are demonstrated in the treatment of patients. 4. Patient education in terms of nutrition, exercise, stress management, posture and weight control ("Wellness") is demonstrated. * Rehabilitation programmes for specific disorders are described and prescribed for patients. 5. Letters of referral and medico-legal reports are written concisely yet comprehensively, clearly and courteously. * Cases are presented and discussed ("rounds") in the correct format and in an acceptable style with evidence of having read widely around the topic. * Effective, efficient and sensitive communication skills with patients are demonstrated. Two 1. The research project will be assessed in terms of: Statement of the objective, Literature review, Research methodology, Reporting the data, Discussion of findings, Recommendations, Contribution to the field, Technical presentation and Style. 2. A draft paper in the format required by an approved journal will be written and presented at the time of submission of the bound copy of the research dissertation. Three 1. The equipment, stock and furnishings necessary to establish a basic practice are listed, and the financial implications are given in terms of numbers of patients required to be seen per month to pay for such. 2. The advantages and disadvantages of employing administrative and nursing staff are stated. * The duties of such staff and how to manage them are described. * The relevant labour law is described. 3. An accounting system in terms of the requirements of the SARS is described. 4. The advantages and disadvantages of single, associate, partnership practices and of locums tenens are described. 5. The legal and ethical rights and responsibilities of a chiropractor in South Africa are described. 6. The ethical and practical value of membership of one's professional association, service clubs as well as of serving the underprivileged community, are described. Four 1. The nature of philosophy, valid and invalid arguments, inductive and deductive reasoning, will be described. 2. Normative ethics, malethics, moral problems, the hallmarks of and ethical foundations of a profession, are described and related to chiropractic. 3. Eastern and Western philosophy, knowledge systems and belief systems, the nature of metaphysics, Reductionism and Holism, the philosophy of natural science, are described, and their relevance to chiropractic is described. Integrated assessment: Formative: Practical and theory tests (feedback) self- and peer-assessment, projects/assignments, re-assessment after feedback (e.g. practicals), research project, clinical competencies.
