PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
A qualifying learner at this level is competent in doing original research and development at specialist level in Metallurgical Engineering thus contributing to the research and development needs and knowledge base of the metallurgical industry and mining community. The qualified person will be able to register with ECSA as professional Technologist.

Capable to put together a dissertation based on scientific research in the field of Metallurgical Engineering.
The applicant should be in possession of a Higher Education and Training Higher Degree or equivalent (NQF 8) in Metallurgical Engineering.

The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence of the qualification, as detailed in the specified outcomes, has been achieved either through education and training in a single provider's learning programme, or through experiential learning that complies with the stated specified outcomes.

    Moderation of all existing courses is done by SERTEC and ECSA. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Examiners are appointed by the Senate on recommendation of the Vice-Rector and Dean concerned.

    Moderators are appointed by the Senate on recommendation of the Vice-Rector and Dean concerned. Moderators for terminating instructional offerings must be competent persons who are not members of staff. Moderators for non-terminating instructional offerings may be full-time or part-time lecturers and/or other competent persons. 

    NOTES 
    While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above). Where relevant, replacement information is
    shown in the table above.
