PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the qualifying learner with advanced levels of training necessary for management and/or research within the Timber processing and related industries. The qualifying learner will have the competence to independently manage and integrate specialist activities within the timber processing and related industries. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Upon entry to the B. Tech degree programme, it is assumed that learners should:
  • have been actively involved in the management of timber processing and related operations through a demonstrated ability to apply,
  • demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of the timber processing industry,
  • demonstrate appropriate basic technical and operational skills of the timber processing industry,
  • demonstrate appropriate basic industry-related computational, managerial, financial and operational knowledge and skills,
  • demonstrate appropriate technical knowledge and understanding of the tools and equipment used in the timber processing industry,
  • demonstrate a basic ability to manage timber processing operations at the intermediate and higher levels.

    Through the successful completion of a:
  • First degree in Wood Technology or equivalent (360 credits),
  • Evidence of practical experience and professional development in the timber processing industry.

    The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence of the qualification, as detailed in the specified outcomes, has been achieved, either through education and training in a single provider's learning programme, or through experience that complies with the stated specified outcomes.

    1. Conduct seminars on prescribed and/or chosen disciplines and to produce a written paper and oral presentation.
  • Assess contemporary timber processing development strategies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to implement sustainable timber processing management strategies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to integrate various disciplines in the timber processing industry into operational management systems.

    2. Undertake a basic timber processing related research project, using appropriate research methodology, as well as critically evaluate and present the outcome thereof.

    While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above).
