PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The BSc (Forestry programme aims at developing competencies and skills in the field of forestry science with focus on silviculture, agro forestry, community forestry and forest resource management to learners. On completion of the programme, learners must have acquired enhanced level of social awareness, responsibilities and understanding of their role in society especially in the private, commercial and public forest sectors.

The programme is focused on the policy which is "sustainable forest development in South Africa"; in this, three main areas are identified - Conservation (existing and community forestry) to meet the needs of the rural people for timber, firewood, etc.

Learning outcomes:
1. A proper understanding of the role of forestry conservation.
2. Forestry science as they relate to forest physiology, mensuration, logging and maintenance of forest ecosystem, etc. in the country SADC and elsewhere
3. Application of basic economic principles in commercial and sustainable forestry business.

Cross-field outcomes:
* Understanding of the roles of forestry in society in its various linkages with other spheres of human activities in order to properly situate the learner's role in the light of their qualification.
* Ability to participate meaningfully using skills, mainly scientific acquired in discussions and decision making in respect to forestry-related issues.
* Ability to function independently with minimal supervision and to effectively supervise subordinates in forestry production matters.
* A well developed sense of ethical and social responsibility.
