PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The primary purpose of this qualification is to provide qualifying learners with the intellectual and practical competencies and professional values in the learner to promote the health of the individual, family, group and community - as a begginer professional nursing practitioner and generalist nurse clinician and midwife, as a member of the health team - through clinical, managerial, educational and research abilities. The qualification serves as a foundation for further learning.

Formative assessment practices that will be implemented

The knowledge, skills, values and attitudes acquired will be assess by means assignments, research essays, class tests, examinations, group and individual projects, workbooks, role playing, clinical skills competency assessments, self en peer evaluations, field visits, portfolios, seminars, assessments during problem and community-based case studies, assessments of transcriptions of therapeutic interviews.

Summative assessment practices that will be implemented:

Integrated assessment, focusing on the achievement of the exit-level outcomes, will be done by means of a oral examination during the assessment of quality nursing in a health unit, clinical examination and written examinations. 

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
  • Access to qualifications on a lower level:
    Learners who are registered for a four-year Nursing College Diploma will be allowed advanced placement. Such learners will retain credits for modules that have been passed, in accordance with policy and procedures of this university in relation with recognition of prior learning. NQF 4; selection criteria for this qualification.
  • Access to qualifications on the same level:
    After completion of this qualification the following possibilities for further studies exist
    *Post-basic degree in Nursing (B Cur. Ed Admin). NQF 6; 360 credits.
  • Access to qualifications on a higher level:
    After completion of this qualification the following possibilities for further studies exist
    *Magister programmes in Nursing Science and related fields. NQF 7; 480 credits
    *Higher Clinical Nursing Diplomas at Higher Education Institutions. NQF 6; 360 credits.
    *Combination of this qualification with B.Com, LL.B, B.Ed, Computer Sciences and Psychology. NQF 6; 360 credits. 

  • MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • All modules on the NQF level 7 are moderated by external moderators. Both clinical and theoretical components are moderated. The exam papers as well as the answering papers of learners are moderated. The moderator provides a written evaluation, based on certain criteria.
  • One appropriate external moderator from any of the 18 Universities or other Higher Education Institutions with Nursing Programmes is appointed for each of the modules on NQF level 7 for both the clinical and the theoretical components. 

  • CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
  • The minimum qualification of assessors is a Masters degree in the specialised field for the theoretical modules. A clinical assessor should have a minimum qualification of a Bachelor's degree or Advanced Diploma in the specialised field for the clinical/practical modules.
  • In the case of clinical and theoretical assessment, a clinical/theoretical expert can be utilised based on her/his credibility and experience in the specialized field.
  • These assessors will be nominated by the programme group members and register with the SANC. 

  • REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
