PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of the qualification is to prepare the qualifying learner to function as a ceramist in the ceramic industry with limited supervision in a multi disciplinary team.

The qualified learner will be able to apply technology from a combination of selected specializations of raw materials, cement technology, heavy clay technology, refractory materials, whitewares, special ceramics, glass and glazes.

QUALIFICATION RULES 
The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence of the qualification, as detailed in the specified outcomes, or through education and training in a single provider's learning programme, or through experiential learning programme, or through experiential learning that complies with the stated specified outcomes. 

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES 
1. Manage the acquisition, collation processing and interpretation of ceramic data and information in conjunction with the integration and evaluation of information for decision making purposes.
2. Apply knowledge of ceramic processes in the ceramic industry to formulate models for decision-making purposes.
3. Manage the application of appropriate techniques and associated instrumentation to support ceramic investigation.

Specified outcomes:

1a) Manage resources allocated to a ceramic project /programme to ensure cost efficiency and/or specific resources allocated to a ceramic project /programme to ensure cost efficiency. (F,E,)
b) Lead the application of appropriate technique(s) for the acquisition, processing and interpretation of relevant ceramic data /information. (C)
c) Integrate ceramic data/information. (C). All relevant data /information from various sources are integrated into a whole.

  • Apply advanced knowledge of all relevant ceramic concepts and principles in conjunction with integrated synthesised data for the raw materials.

  • Manage the activities and resources relating to the application of appropriate techniques and instrumentation for ceramics investigations.
  • Develop novel techniques/ instrumentation for ceramics investigations.

    Integrated assessment:

    1. Year mark through continuous formative evaluation of tests, assignments, projects and tutorials.

    Summative evaluation through written examination on mastery of all components of learning for all subjects.

    While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above).
