In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This qualification does not replace any other qualification and is not replaced by any other qualification.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The purpose of the qualification is to prepare the qualified learner to function as a ceramic technologist in the fields of raw materials for heavy clays, cement technology, refractory materials, whitewares, special ceramics, glass and glazes under immediate or distant supervision, and in multi-disciplinary teams.

The qualified learner will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills of natural sciences in applying these to ceramic sciences contexts.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
FET certificate at NQF 4 or equivalent, with Numeracy skills and Physical Science skills at NQF 4.

QUALIFICATION RULES
The qualification will be awarded to a learner who has provided evidence to the satisfaction of the assessors that the stated competence of the qualification, as detailed in the specified outcomes, has been achieved, either through education and training in a single provider`s learning programme, or through experiential learning that complies with the stated specified outcomes.

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
1. Acquire, collate, analyze, and interpret data, and report findings.
2. Apply knowledge of ceramic processes in the raw material, heavy clay, cement, refractory materials, whitewares, special ceramics, glass and glazes industries.
3. Identify and know the applications of a range of techniques and associated instrumentation that support ceramics investigations.
4. Apply selected techniques and associated instrumentation to support ceramic investigations.

Specified outcomes:
1. a) Identify and acquire ceramic data /information. (C).
  • The appropriate technique is applied.
  • Data are documented in an appropriate way and are accessible.
  • Data acquired are relevant to the problem.
  • The data are evaluated and/or validated.
    b) Processing of ceramic data.(C).
  • The data are reduced appropriately.
  • The appropriate processing techniques are applied to the given context.
    c) Interpretation of ceramic data. (F).
  • The interpretation fits data and Amodel@, appropriate to the given context.
    d) Present information. (F,E).
  • Observations, measurements and interpretations are reported accurately and clearly
  • The presentation will be clear, concise and address the given context.

    2. a) Apply knowledge of raw materials for the development of ceramic products and processes. (c).

    b) Concepts, principles and theories of the composition of the raw materials are explained, described, and integrated in a given context.

    c) Apply knowledge to the construction industry to identify, describe, evaluate and explain problematic areas (c).

    3. a) Select appropriate techniques and associated instrumentation to identify all chemical and mineralogical ceramic properties. (C).
  • Appropriate chemical, and mineralogical techniques and associated instruments are selected and motivated for a given context.
    b) Select the appropriate techniques and associated instrumentation to identify physical properties. (C,F).
    c) Select appropriate sampling technique and laboratory analyses, for a given context. (F)

    4. a) Apply selected ceramic techniques and associated instrumentation. (C)
  • Apply appropriate techniques and instruments to characterize ceramic targets.
  • Observations, measurements and limited interpretation of results of chemical, mineralogical and physical properties are performed.

    Critical outcomes:
    C = Core, F = Fundamental and E = Elective outcomes

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
    1. The qualifying learner should provide evidence of his / her abilities with respect to acquisition of appropriate data that is in accordance with the objectives.
  • Appropriate processing of data utilizing standard processing techniques.
  • Interpretation of data
  • Scientific report writing

    2. The qualifying learner should provide evidence of his abilities to apply and / or consider the following in the exploitation of ceramic fields:
  • Knowledge of all ceramic concepts and principles relevant to the specific resource and those that could impact on the environment

    3. The qualifying learner should provide evidence of his / her knowledge of:
  • Selection of the appropriate techniques and instrumentation for the identification of all chemical, mineralogical and physical properties
  • Working principles and limitations of applicability of the instrumentation for a given context.

    4. The qualifying learner should provide evidence of his / her abilities with regard to:
  • The application of appropriate techniques or instrumentation and limited interpretation of results in support of ceramic investigations.

    Integrated assessment:

    1. Yearmark through continuous formative evaluation of tests, assignments and projects.

    2. Summative evaluation through written examination and practicals.

    3. Formative / summative panel evaluation of project.

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS
This qualification leads vertically (up) to admittance for the B Tech Ceramics Technology.

    MODERATION OPTIONS
Moderation of all existing courses is done by SERTEC.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS
Comply to the regulations of the extend accreditation body (SERTEC).

    NOTES
While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above). Where relevant, replacement information is s
    hown in the table above.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
