EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
The graduate should:

* Have the ability to do research, resolve and articulate mathematical problems and application possibilities of mathematics.
* Have problem-solving skills for solving mathematical problems.
* Have insight and desire for advanced study in mathematical areas of research interest.
* Have ability to engage in active research in (abstract) mathematics and applicable Mathematics.
* Have ability to engage in intellectual and gainful economic activities.
* Have the capacity to provide leadership in mathematics teaching and research to students and peer mathematicians.

Specify critical cross-field outcomes:

* Skills gained will be useful for resolving problems arising in mathematical sciences, physical, chemical and social sciences and other related subjects.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
This will consist of seminars, oral, tests and examinations and thesis. Where limited remedial work is involved, written test and / or examinations will be assessed.

Integrated assessment incorporated to ensure that the purpose of the degree is achieved:

1. Written examinations
2. Oral examinations

Written tests, seminars and examination of thesis.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS
This qualification provides credits for the related qualification(s):

Ph.D (Mathematical Physics)

MODERATION OPTIONS
State measures to ensure that assessment is fair, reliable and valid:

The thesis to be moderated by:
* The supervisor who has guided the research.
* One internal independent academic (where possible), in the same area of research interest, who has not guided the research.
* One external assessor
* OR as in the university regulations on higher degrees.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS
Internal Assessors: Ph.D. in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics.
External Assessors: Ph.D. in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics.

* Internal assessors must be at least of senior lecturer level, with evident teaching and active research experience in the relevant subject area.
* External assessors must be at least of senior lecturer level (or better), and a wide experience in university teaching and active research in the relevant subject area.

Both internal and external assessors must show evidence of active research work in mathematical sciences (i.e. in mathematics/applied mathematics).
In the case of external assessor, experience as external examiner will be an added advantage.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
