PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The purpose of the qualification is to equip and provide potential musicians in our country with skills and competence in a number of areas in music. The qualification will also address the general ignorance about the value of academic music study. This will contribute towards providing South Africa with significant numbers of music experts (i.e. performers, researchers, facilitators, managers, producers, publishers, and others). Graduates will acquire adequate ammunition to explore and develop their own career opportunities, which will eventually lead them to personal development and economic independence.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

2. Admission is subject to full completion of Certificate in Music (Univen) or Unisa, Trinity or Royal Schools of Music Grade 5 theory or equivalent. An audition in the first instrument and a test in music theory will be conducted to assess the candidate's level of proficiency.

These will include: Involvement in community projects around the province (conducting music workshops and establishing extension programmes with surrounding schools, etc), establishing interdisciplinary research projects with other schools and departments in the university and also inter-institutional linkages throughout the country, and affiliation and contribution in accredited music journals, professional bodies, seminars and conferences held nationally and internationally.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

The programme leading to a Bachelor of Music (BMus) qualifies the candidate for further training at postgraduate level at this university or any other institution that offers music programmes or any other related arts programmes.

MODERATION OPTIONS

A set of guidelines for assessment of each module for use by internal and external examiners and other experts is in place. Measures to ensure that assessment is fair, reliable and valid were undertaken. This was done through consultation with other experienced music academics, scholars and experts.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

1. The qualifications of the assessors for the BMus programmes must comply with the requirements set by the university. The assessors must at least have acquired one degree higher than that for which the candidates are enrolled.

2. Experience, as a practitioner in a specific field of music is a priority. Another requirement will be some teaching experience (particularly at tertiary institution level) in the field.
