PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION
The qualifying learner will have the competence to conduct independent research under minimal guidance in a chosen field, and contribute to knowledge production in that field. Graduates of this course are able to lead people in product and process development as well as in research projects.
The explosives and armaments industry employ graduates from this course. Opportunities exist for graduates to pursue further educational qualifications.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
A 480-credit B. Tech in Explosives Technology or a 480- credit equivalent qualification at NQF level 7 or RPL.

RECOGNISE PREVIOUS LEARNING?

EXIT LEVEL OUTCOMES
1. Integrate existing knowledge with own research findings and development results in the field of investigation and present the integrated product as a thesis.

Specified outcomes:

1. Source, analyse and critically evaluate literature relevant to the field of investigation.
(C; 30 credits; NQF 8).
  • Apply appropriate research methods and techniques independently and effectively in the research process to solve complex problems using appropriate knowledge and skills.
    (C;60 credits; NQF 8).
  • Report findings in scientific format as a thesis and make a presentation to a professional audience.
    (C; 30 credits; NQF 8).

    Critical outcomes:
  • Identifying and solving problems while thinking critically and creatively in structuring, conducting and reporting on a development or research project in a specialised area of explosives technology.
  • Analysing and critically evaluating information sourced from literature or generated personally in the particular field of study.
  • Working effectively with scientists and engineers as a team in the particular field of explosives sciences at a high academic level.
  • Managing one's own time to achieve successful execution of a development or research project and integrate all information meaningful.
  • Communicating, particularly in terms of explosives sciences in acceptable style both verbally and in written reports and publications.
  • Using explosives and related science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and the health of others.
  • Recognising the interdependence of related systems by integrating it into meaningful and successful programmes in the field of explosives sciences.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
    1. A comprehensive literature base is critically analysed and evaluated to establish recent trends in technologies, techniques, models and theories in the relevant field.

Models, principles, theories, techniques and methodologies in the relevant field are analysed, evaluated and used correctly in the investigation.

The research problem is clearly identified, defined and detailed in a proposal for a research project.

    2. The chosen route of solving the research problem, (hypothesis) directs the investigation.
  • Knowledge and skills in the field of explosives technology are applied to visualise possible solutions for a complex problem and conduct the necessary research.
  • The appropriate mathematical and statistical methods are applied correctly to data where necessary.
  • Findings are critically analysed, evaluated, interpreted and conclusions made.

    3. Logical interpretation of data reflects clear understanding of the relationship between facts in the study and information from literature.
  • The interpretation and conclusions based on critical review of data are valid.
  • Language and numeracy skills are applied effectively and correctly in clearly communicating the research problem, its investigation, the outcome, and the recommendations.
  • Findings are presented at an appropriate national or international conference.

    Integrated assessment:

    Formative assessment:

    Oral presentations
    Research proposals
    Written progress reports

    Summative Assessment:

    Research thesis
    Oral and visual presentations

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS
Vertical articulation to the PhD/ D.Tech in Explosives Technology or related disciplines.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS
    SERTEC (currently).

    NOTES
While South Africa still had Technikons, all of their qualifications were registered under the Committee of Technikon Principals. After the Technikons became Universities of Technology or merged with Universities, the qualifications were registered under each of these institutions, and the CTP qualifications fell away (hence the end date of 2006, above). Where relevant, replacement information is
    shown in the table above.

LEARNING PROGRAMMES RECORDED AGAINST THIS QUALIFICATION:
When qualifications are replaced, some of their learning programmes are moved to being recorded against the replacement qualifications. If a learning programme appears to be missing from here, please check the replacement.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS QUALIFICATION:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
