PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

The first purpose of the qualification is to provide learners with graduate-level knowledge, specific skills and applied competence in a number of fields of business and management that provide opportunities for continued personal growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society

The second purpose of the qualification is to provide South Africa with significant numbers of black graduates in business and management in order to redress the extremely small proportion of disadvantaged executives in the managerial labour force as well as ensure that the local leadership base of innovative and knowledge based economic and business activity in the Eastern Cape is widened.

The third purpose of the qualification is to add to the skills-base of University graduates who would otherwise have difficulty finding good jobs in both the private and public sector of the economy both of which sorely need general management skills.

Direct Admission

Direct admission into the two-year part-time MBA programme requires a Bachelor's degree in business administration or economic sciences from any South African University or an accredited overseas university. Proficiency in mathematics as evidenced, preferably by a D symbol at matriculation or any other qualification in mathematics or mathematical statistics is required. In addition, candidates must have at least two years of post-degree working experience

Post-graduate Certificate in Business Administration

Candidates with degrees other than business administration or economic sciences and who have at least two years of work experience are first admitted into a one-year post - graduate certificate in business administration, the successful completion of which they can be admitted to the programme. Admission would also be granted to candidates with at least a matriculation certificate and about ten years of work experience and holding a managerial position. Evidence of managerial status and continuous self-improvement on the job would be required

Formative Assessment:

Active and interactive assessment methods such as group discussions, individual and group assignments, class presentations, simulations, audiovisuals, experiential exercises, seminars and management games, guest lecturers and field projects, will be applied.

Diagnostic assessment:

This will be applied to pin-point general misinterpretations and mistakes through the application of feedback on tests, suggested solutions to applied problems and case studies as well as personal guidance.
