PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this programme is to provide postgraduate pharmacists the opportunity to become competent to practice as distinguished leaders on a highly specialised level as community, hospital or clinical pharmacist in
providing a comprehensive pharmaceutical service to the inhabitants of South Africa.

1. Community pharmacy

The candidate will be capable of providing a specialised community service within the scope of practice of pharmacists, be in the position of a leader in the community pharmacy and functions of the profession and apply research methodology by:
  • Applying the principles of advanced pharmacy management in practise.
  • Utilising communication skills and adapting to different cultural contexts.
  • Having specialised knowledge of professional aspects pertaining to community pharmacy.
  • Applying the concepts of advanced pharmaco-therapy in practice.
  • Utilising specialised knowledge of pharmaceutical care.
  • Management and control of effective medicine distribution system in a community pharmacy environment.


    2. Hospital pharmacy

    The candidate will be capable of:

    Providing a specialised service within the scope of practise of a hospital Pharmacist, be in a position of leader in the Hospital Pharmacy environment and functions of the profession and apply research methodology by:
  • Utilising specialised skills of hospital pharmacy management.
  • Obtaining specialised knowledge of hospital pharmaceutical services.
  • Obtaining specialised knowledge of advance pharmacology.
  • Utilising specialised knowledge of pharmaceutical care.
  • Management and control of effective medicine distribution system in a community pharmacy environment.


    3. Industrial pharmacy

    The candidate will be capable of management of industrial pharmaceutical applications, manufacturing and compounding of pharmaceuticals, distributing of pharmaceuticals and applying research technology and methodology by:
  • Applying management skills related to industrial pharmacy.
  • Manage pre-formulation and stability of pharmaceuticals.
  • Development of new products.
  • Quality control of pharmaceuticals in the industry.
  • Manage the production in the pharmaceutical industry.

    ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
    1. A candidate will be able to practice on a highly specialised level as a Community Pharmacist in providing a comprehensive pharmaceutical service in the community pharmaceutical environment.

    The professional roles include the following:
  • Management of a pharmacy / pharmaceutical services;
  • Ensure quality use of medicine;
  • Provide pharmacist initiated therapy;
  • Provide medicine information and education;
  • Promote public health in the community;
  • Promote effective communication;
  • Provide pharmaceutical care.


    2. Hospital pharmacy

    A candidate will be competent to practice on a highly specialised level as a Hospital Pharmacist in providing a comprehensive pharmaceutical service in the hospital environment.

    The professional roles include the following;
  • Management of specialised hospital services;
  • Organise and control hospital-level manufacturing and/or compounding;
  • Organise, procurement, storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals in the hospital environment;
  • Ensure optimal hospital dispensing practise;
  • Provide pharmaceutical care in hospitals;
  • Provide effective information and education systems in the hospital environment;
  • Promote public health in hospitals.


    3. Industrial pharmacy

    A candidate will be competent to practice, as a scientist with special knowledge of the technology and skills required in the pharmaceutical industry.

    The professional roles include the following:
  • Formulation, manufacturing and distribution of pharmaceutical products.
  • Control the safety, effectiveness and quality of pharmaceutical products.
  • Fulfil the broad spectrum of professional roles required for good pharmacy practice.
  • Pharmaceutical management with regard to human resources, accounting and marketing.
  • Pharmaceutical quality assurance and control.


    Integrated Assessment:

    A module mark is obtained through assignments and tasks related to the contents of each module as well as a written examination in each module.

    The following quality assurance procedures are part of the overall evaluation of the qualifications:
  • Internal examiners and moderators.
  • External examiners and moderators.
  • PCSA moderation.

    ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
    This qualification gives access to postgraduate studies such as M.Pharm, M.Sc and Ph.D in Pharmacy and related health disciplines at this University and other Universities nationally and internationally. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    For each examination, the Board of the Faculty of Health Sciences will appoint both internal and external examiners. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    Only suitable qualified pharmacists or relevant academic personnel of both the University and relevant pharmaceutical disciplines with at least a relevant Masters qualification will be used for assessing the various courses as well as students. External examiners will be appointed according to the guideline of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education. 

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
    As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
