PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
Graduates of this course are able to:

Lead technicians and technologists in relevant laboratories.

Apply specialised strategies to satisfy the needs of the laboratory workers, the owners of the laboratory and the internal and external customers.

Act as international managers to ensure success in the process of globalisation.

Develop a business plan that will enable the laboratory to be cost effective and be a wealth creator.

Develop new markets for the laboratory, leading to expansion of the services rendered by the laboratory and job creation.

Develop strategies with regard to instrument management (procurement, preventative maintenance, replacement, disposal), materials management, methodology management, information management and quality management.

Apply the principles of productivity management and entrepreneurship in order to create wealth.

They may work as laboratory managers in scientific laboratories, including chemistry, physics, biology, pharmacy, metallurgy, environmental laboratories. Educational institutions can also employ these graduates. Opportunities exist for graduates to pursue further educational qualifications. Graduates may apply for full membership of subject associations, for example chemists can apply at SACI (South African Chemical Institute) and professional registration as national science technologists with the South African Council For Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP).

    * Replacement of instrumentation is ensured by depreciation.
    * Financial planning in terms of budgets is executed.
    * Pricing is carefully planned to ensure profitability and global competitiveness.
    * A sound business strategy is in place.
    * The integrity of the assets and liabilities is ensured.
    * An entrepreneurial business plan has been developed and is in use.
    * The main financial goal of the laboratory is to create wealth by making a profit and to ensure a responsible distribution of the value added between the workers, the owners/shareholders, the community, the government, etc.
