PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
This qualification includes the various specialisations in Dentistry. Please refer to "Notes" for details on the specialisations.

To equip and train a graduate general practitioner to deliver a more advanced clinical service in one or more dental disciplines to the community

To stimulate general dental practitioners to undertake more advanced postgraduate study and to advance their scientific knowledge

To enable general dental practitioners to attain a sufficient postgraduate standard to enable them to Register the qualification as an additional qualification with the Health Professional Council of South Africa. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption or equivalent university admission qualification.

First degree: Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.Ch.D)

The Postgraduate Diploma in Dentistry diplomand will have:


1. Knowledge of the literature, in excess of that expected from a graduate dentist, pertaining to a specific field of dentistry

2. The ability to utilize information technology to access appropriate information

3. A high standing knowledge of investigative, diagnostic and clinical methods to evaluate a patient critically in those fields where it is appropriate

4. A deepened knowledge of relevant basic subjects in order to assess a patient's general condition in those disciplines where it is relevant

5. The ability to communicate effectively with patients and peers in a team context and to play a meaningful role as a member of society


The Postgraduate Diploma in Dentistry diplomand will be able to:


1. Read and interpret scientific literature pertaining especially to a chosen limited aspect of dentistry and to apply this knowledge to a problem

2. Demonstrate competence in skills necessary for the performance of clinical, investigative, diagnostic and organisational procedure on a postgraduate level.

3. Meet the criteria of the Health Professions Council of South Africa for the registration of an additional qualification.


The Postgraduate Diploma in Dentistry diplomand will demonstrate:


1. The capacity for independent study and information recall

2. The ability to investigate, diagnose and successfully treat a case, or resolve a problem on postgraduate, but not specialist, level

3. The ability to write a scientific report in internationally accepted format

4. A professional working relationship within the profession 

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
1. Preparation of clinical case reports demonstrating the utilisation of high level knowledge of the literature, investigative, diagnostic and clinical skills (where appropriate)


2. The independent evaluation and management of clinical cases, situations and problems on a postgraduate level in the chosen field of dentistry


1) Evaluation of four written assignments during Module I (first year)

2) Evaluation of a main written assignment during Module II (second year). This must be in accepted scientific format

1. Evaluation of four written assignments, during Module I (first year), utilising in-depth literature knowledge on aspects allied to the candidate's main field of interest

2. Evaluation f a main written assignments (Module II, year two) concerning the candidate's main field of interest and containing in-depth literature knowledge/reviews, evaluation of investigative methods, diagnostic and clinical procedures in a clinical discipline

3. Evaluation of a main written assignment (Module II, year two) concerning the candidate's main field of interest, utilizing in-depth literature knowledge/reviews, assessment of a non-clinical problem situation and proposing a diagnosis or solution.

4. All written assignments must be presented in internationally accepted format.


INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT


During Module I (first year) students are required to attend 4 subdivisions (quarterly, 3-4 days duration) during which lectures, practical sessions and hands-on exercises are offered. The students are given assignments after each contact session. Assignments are evaluated and a mark given for each. Each assignment contributes 25% to the total mark for Module I. Thos must be passed (50%) before proceeding to Module II.

The main assignment (Module II) deals with the specialised field of choice and must conform to international standards in format and literary presentation. This assignment is evaluated for a final mark. A pass mark is 50%.

The university of Stellenbosch has a system of external peer review and evaluation of departments. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
The academic staff of the university of Stellenbosch will be used in a manner which fits into the quality assurance system of the university.
