Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
1. To prepare qualifiers for the profession in Physiotherapy and provide them with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to function independently as Physiotherapists at any level of the total health sector and to provide opportunities for continued personal intellectual growth, gainful economic activity and rewarding contributions to society.

2. To enable the students to do research in the field of physiotherapy through training in research methods.

3. To prepare students who aspire to move to higher levels of academic work.

Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption or equivalent admission qualification.


Other qualification(s)


Graduates with applicable qualifications and BSc I candidates with subjects in the biological sciences, compete for a limited number of reserved places.

General average - C symbol, with at least a C symbol (standard grade) or D symbol (higher grade) in Science and Mathematics.

Students with inadequate secondary education join the Academic Development Programme by which the first year is extended over two years.

  • ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    Assessment of Generic outcomes is achieved as part of the assessment of the Specific outcomes.

    The learner should have ability in:

    1. Discussing and clinically demonstrating the physiotherapeutic management for a range of patients within the context of the health system by correlating information and proposing valid solutions.

    2. Recognising cultural diversity and understanding appropriate health policies in implementing appropriate rehabilitation strategies.

    3. Recognising professional accountability and responsibility towards the profession and the community

    4. Assessment of the above is done by a range of formative and summative assessment methods such as clinical portfolios, simulations, workplace assessments,
    written and oral examinations.

    5. Planning and conducting a basic research project and presenting the outcomes in a logical and coherent written report and an oral presentation of an acceptable standard.


    INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT


    The final clinical assessment at the end of the fourth year constitutes the process in which the student's integration of the knowledge and basic competencies acquired in the other programme modules are assessed.

    The assessment of the written research report and an oral presentation constitutes the integration of the knowledge and basic competencies acquired in the research methodology module.

    Other articulation possibilities, either generic or specific:

    Physics (medical) III, Chemistry (medical) III and Biology (medical) III provide entry into BSc degrees.

    Psychology 144 and 243 provide entry into BA degrees. 

    MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The university of Stellenbosch has a system of external peer review and evaluation of departments. One of the aspects of the system is evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.

    A system of external moduration is layed down by the Professional Board of Physiotherapy of the Health Professions Council of South Africa. External assessors are invited from other universities. 

    CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
    The academic staff of the university of Stellenbosch will be used in a manner that is consistent with the quality assurance system of the university.

    The professional Board of Physiotherapy of the Health Professions Council of South Africa provides assessors on a four yearly rotation to assess the programme.
