PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION

Apply educational knowledge, skills, principles and methods to explain and provide occupational therapy within a comprehensive health service; manage occupational therapy services effectively; train and facilitate occupational therapy assistants and community workers, and carrying out research as a member of a team.

To successfully complete the qualification the learner will have to demonstrate his/her learning via module specific learning outcomes as well as critical cross-field learning outcomes.

Module specific outcomes will include capabilities relating to module knowledge and the understanding thereof within a specific context, and capabilities relating to integrated knowledge and skills from a variety of disciplines within the field.

Critical cross-field outcomes will include those specified in the learning outcomes for approved modules in the certificate and as appropriate to the learner's field of practice.

1. Planning basic occupational therapy and treatment skilfully for more common pathologies, using the occupational therapy knowledge base of treatment and professional bodies to develop protocols for patient populations;
2. Ethically evaluating occupational therapy practice and handling patients with sensitivity;
3. Managing a basic occupational therapy practice, its policies and protocols;
4. Recognising and commending the patients to support groups in the community, which may be beneficial to them.

The learner will be able to analyse and apply the basic principles relevant to the following:

1. Understand how social, medical and occupational therapy subsystems interrelate, and have a sound theoretical knowledge in order to discuss models of health as basis for patient evaluation, treatment and occupational reintegration.
2. Communicate sensitively with all cultures in handling persons with physical and psychiatric disorders and disability;
3. Creatively think in planning and using scientific theory for planning occupational therapy programs for patients with biomechanical, neurophysiological, psychia-tric, cognitive and developmental problems;
4. Collect and critically evaluate information;
5. Handle persons physically, individually or in groups using their group handling, splinting, neuro-physiological, stress handling skills to the benefit of the patient;
6. Work and organise effectively with others as a team and run a practice effectively;
7. Collect, analyse and conceptually and statistically order information;
8. React as responsible citizens with an awareness of ethical issues in practice.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

A learner should provide evidence of learning competency (knowledge, skills and attitude) by means of the following:

Assessment is by means of OSCEs, clinical case studies, practical and written assignments, projects and written and clinical examination. The programme and its standards are evaluated by the Professional Board of Occupational Therapy of HPC of SA and in turn by OTASA and WFOT.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT:

Competence is achieved, through continuous assessment by demonstrating the ability to achieve the outcomes of the Qualification.

Explaining and providing occupational therapy services within a comprehensive health service according to set standards.

Rendering and managing occupational therapy treatment and services effectively according to prescribed standards.

Developing and presenting training and facilitation programmes for occupational therapy assistants and community workers in accordance with prescribed standards.

Conducting a research project in a team and reporting the results according to set research standards.

Standards are set by the university and professional board.

This will be supported by a module credit system, followed by a final exam on the modules for which credit was not obtained.

Assessment documents are moderated to ensure that:

They conform to the scope and context of the competency as stipulated in the qualification.

They are constructed in such a way that the Assessor assesses the critical outcomes applied, during the Learners activity performances, towards achieving an outcome.

To include confirmation of the Embedded Knowledge component to ensure that the Foundational Competency is achieved.

To be verified by Internal Verifiers to ensure valid, credible, true and fair results.

ARTICULATION OPTIONS

Vertical: M.(Occupational Therapy)

Horizontal: Bachelors or honours degree in related fields

MODERATION OPTIONS

A system of external peer review and evaluation of departments including evaluation of the standards and assessment practices per Department.

Qualifications: The minimum academic and workplace experience requirements at a level above the level of moderation.

Appropriate professional criteria will be drafted in the case of workplace assessment.

Mentorship: All junior and new members of staff are mentored by senior members as they work together in teams. All assessment done by external assessors is quality controlled by internal staff.

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS

The academic staff of the University of the Free State complies with standards set by Senate and will exercise their assessment within the approved quality assurance system of the University. Assessors will also meet all criteria as stipulated by the relevant ETQA.
