PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
  • Provide the student with advanced specialized knowledge of social work and a philosophical framework for understanding the profession.
  • To provide students with an ability to perceive their belief systems in a context of widely divergent approaches.
  • To produce a student who will be capable to respond to South Africa's major socio economic and political problems, such as poverty, unemployment, violence, literacy and HIV/AIDS within the global context.
  • To provide students with a policy homework based on principles of empowerment and participation through integrating their knowledge of communities.
  • To enable students to become better participants of research by familiarizing them with various approaches to research.

    Integrated Assessment:

    Integrated assessment will be determined as follows:
  • Knowledge base will be determined by means of tests, assignments and report writing.
  • Applied competence will be determined by means of seminars, role plays, simulations, supervisory evaluation, oral and written examinations.
  • Integration of theory and practice where knowledge base in action will be assessed by means of supervisory evaluation, performance assessment and affirmation by schools. 

  • ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
  • The qualification will bear same recognition for equivalent programmes at other universities (horizontal).
  • Learners who have achieved the stated exit level outcomes will be able to proceed to a doctorate level (vertical). 

  • MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • For continuous assessment, internal second examiners/moderators will be utilised.
  • External examiners will be selected according to the statutes of the unviersity with the process starting from the Departmental boards, Faculty boards and Senate.
  • In compliance with the NQF the student's work may also be moderated by the Educational and Training Assurers (ETQA) or other bodies accredited by the ETQA's.
