The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The qualification forms an optional part added to the usual part of the accreditation Process for medical practitioners as Specialists in Radiation Oncology. The Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) stipulates training requirements, including a minimum period of experiential learning. It is usual for the examination to be taken and passed prior to the completion of the required period of supervised learning specified by the HPCSA. The aim of the examination is to supplement the formal examination certification and allow candidates to write a Part III: dissertation, whose successful completion leads to the award of the MMed degree. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
MBChB, MBBCh, or equipment qualification acceptable to the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

Two years of supervised medical practice that may include the internship year, and the year of compulsory community service.

A further 1 year of clinical medical practice which may or may not have been supervised, and which may be in any medical discipline including private general practice.

Current registration with the HPCSA as a medical practitioner.

Senior certificate with Matriculation Exemption or Equivalent university admission qualification.

First degree:

Recognition of prior learning:

One year internship/one year clinical experience other than specialist field of training.

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT


Certification by the Head of the candidate's training department that the candidate has spent at least 1 year in an HPCSA approved Department of Radiation Oncology prior to the Part 1 of the CMSA examination.

Certification that the candidate has spent at least 3 years in a Department as above, prior to the Part 2 of the CMSA examination.

Certification that the candidate has spent at least 4 years in a Department as above prior to recognition as a Specialist with the HPCSA.

The University of Cape Town has a system of external peer review and evaluation of each course. One of the aspects of the system is an evaluation of the standards and assessment practices of the department.
