The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To provide training in the theory and practice of Orthopaedic Surgery, including oeprative surgery and the Applied Sciences. The programme aims to allow certification (according to the requirements of the Health Professions Council of South Africa), as a registered specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery Training. Provide medical offices with special orthopaedic training. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
" The ability to diagnose, investigate and treat orthopaedic problems and diseases at a specialist level. This would include sound judgement pre-operative care, manipulative treatment, surgery and post-operative care.

Integrated Assessment:

1. Certification by the programme convenor that the candidate has undergone 12 months' training, including 6 months in the Intensive Care Unit, 6 months in Trauma and / or 6 months in General Surgery.
2. Certification by the programme convenor of having completed a minimum of 4 years of specialised surgical training, allowing the candidate to sit for the Part II of the FCS (SA) Orthopaedic Surgery examination with the College of Medicine. Credit is given towards the MMed of the College examinations passed.
3. The presentation of a dissertation on an aspect of surgical research in addition to 1 and 2.
