| PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION |
| 1. The qualification aims to provide qualifiers with the necessary knowledge, specific skills and applied competence such that they will meet the requirements for specialisation in general medicine of the College of Medicine of South Africa. This includes a minimum period of supervised experiential learning and success in the College of Medicine examination for the FCP (Fellowship of College of Physicians). This qualification forms part of the credentialing process for registration as specialists in internal medicine registered as such by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Further to provide qualifiers with the necessary foundation to conduct and present an independent research project.
2. Also, the qualification provides South Africa with sufficient numbers of well-trained competent general physicians to serve the community and a smaller number who have begun to contribute to scholarly activity in the field. |

| ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
Integrated assessment: 1. Certification by the head of the learner's training programme that they have completed at least 3 years of a full-time post-internship training as a medical registrar or clinical assistant in a teaching hospital department of medicine or 2 years in a teaching hospital department of medicine plus 1 year as a registrar in a non-teaching hospital affiliated to this medical school. 2. One written examination in Basic Sciences - College of Medicine. 3. Two written examinations on the Principles and Practices of Medicine including clinical investigation, diagnosis and treatment - College of Medicine. 4. An objective test including slide recognition and interpretation of investigative data - College of Medicine. 5. A practical examination on clinical aspects of internal medicine - College of Medicine. 6. Oral examination in Basic Sciences - College of Medicine. 7. Oral examination in the Principles and Practices of Medicine - College of Medicine. 8. Submission of a dissertation reporting the results of research conducted by the learner. |
