PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
To provide qualifiers with advanced knowledge of the theory and practice underlying choral conducting as well as specialised performance skills preparing them to pursue a career in the field of choral performance and contribute to the artistic growth and enjoyment of society. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
A BMus degree at NQF level 7 or equivalent professional qualifications in Music.


Recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning will be based on an extensive portfolio of choral performances linked to a practical assessment by the School of Music.

By the end of the programme learners will be able to:

1. Master theoretically advanced subject matter in the field of Music in general and choral conducting in specific.

2. Demonstrate an ability to define and respond to research problems related to choral conducting in a manner that reconfigures existing knowledge.

3. Demonstrate a capacity for independent study.

4. Challenge orthodox theory and practice prevalent in choral conducting for good reasons, and suggest new approaches.

5. Effectively interact and engage in debate within the academic community and choral performing sectors.

6. Work effectively in research teams in generating solutions for existing or newly defined questions in the field of choral conducting.

7. Demonstrate the ability to lead a choir at an artistically advanced level in a variety of music styles.

8. Demonstrate appropriate academic values, including flexibility, tolerance and responsiveness.

9. Show a commitment to the advancement of choral music in all its variety therewith contributing to the cultural growth of our society.

ASSOCIATED ASSESSMENT CRITERIA 
Integrated assessment

Apart from written assessments, the focus is on choral performance assessed by inside and outside experts. 

ARTICULATION OPTIONS 
Vertical articulation: Articulation with the MMus degree after meeting research-bridging work as may be required.

Horizontal articulation: Based on recognition of credits. 

MODERATION OPTIONS 
Artistic moderation of choral performances. No moderating body. 

CRITERIA FOR THE REGISTRATION OF ASSESSORS 
The M Mus degree and extensive experience in choral conducting. Or adequate professional qualifications in Music plus extensive experience in choral conducting. 

REREGISTRATION HISTORY 
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this qualification was Reregistered in 2006.
