Registered-data under construction

The qualification content is currently being updated for the qualifications with the status “Registered-data under construction” or showing “DETAILS UNDER CONSTRUCTION” to ensure compliance with SAQA’S Policy and Criteria for the registration of qualifications and part-qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) (As amended, 2022). These qualifications are re-registered until 30 June 2027 and can legitimately be offered by the institutions to which they are registered.

 

In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.  

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE OF THE QUALIFICATION 
The purpose of this qualification is to train statisticians who will be able to work as academics at both institutions and other tertiary institutions in this country. As such they will be able to lecture in both Mathematical Statistics and Statistics and will also be able to work as researchers in these disciplines. These statisticians will also be able to work in any sector of the South African economy. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Recognition of Prior Learning:
The institution conducts RPL in terms of the policy and guidelines of the institution to recognise other forms of formal, informal and non-formal learning and experience. In cases where learners do not comply with the formal admission requirements, the institution applies its RPL policy.

An Honours qualification in Mathematical Statistics or any other indication of sufficient prior learning that can be demonstrated and assessed.

Entry requirements:
The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:
  • Bachelor of Science Honours in Mathematical Statistics, NQF Level 8.

    Assessment Criteria:
    Assessment criteria will be based on testing the learners' knowledge of the chosen fields of study and on his/her mini-dissertation.
    The qualifier will:
  • Apply the correct methodology to a given problem.
  • Use the correct statistical procedures to use in a given circumstance.
  • Be familiar with this field of research and have done a literature survey.
  • Use the most appropriate software for the given problem.
    Alternatively if the learner has opted to do the master's qualification by dissertation only, then it will be this dissertation that will be assessed.
